The hotel is ideally placed and the staff are first class but the room we had was noisy. What sounded like a machine with worn bearings stopped at 11.00 and started again at 6.00. My guess is that that the noise was coming from the kitchen on the floor below. We were in room 127.

When we reported this the next morning to the reception staff we were immediately offered another room (117) but the hotel management should have known about the problem, especially since they make a good night's sleep a prominent part of their advertising.

Room Tip: Avoid any room close to the kitchen, especially 127.

Premiere Inns are all over England, so the question an American might ask is: to what level of hotel chain in America might they compare? Answer without getting too specific: I'd say a pretty nice one. Definitely better than the lower end. Rooms are large, and well-maintained. Food available for extra cost at the ground floor cafeteria is good enough for breakfast or dinner, and breakfast is served early to help one get a quick start on the day. Usually, there are two levels of breakfast--continental (cheaper) or hot. While there is no lobby in which to meet "clients," if you're traveling for vacation or in a situation where there are no clients to meet, you should definitely feel comfortable staying here whenever it is geographically convenient.

One further point about the Durham Premiere Inn City Centre: it looks on a map as though it's walking distance from the train station, but I would recommend against this. The topography is quite hilly and the roads are constructed in a confusing fashion. So, just take a taxi, it's inexpensive. Is the hotel within walking distance of the beautiful cathedral, the castle, or the university colleges? That, yes. An easy walk and therefore a good place to stay for a visit to any of them.

My wife, Lady Katherine, was on a residential training course in Durham and I travelled up from Gloucester t join her for a long weekend, staying at the City Centre Premier Inn.
My overall first impressions of the place were very satisfactory. The reception staff were very knowledgeable, professional and courteous.
Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff, right down to the team who clean and tidy the rooms, everyone was amazing. I would like to thank the Manager James, who despite being a young man, runs a tight ship with no let downs.
We didn't eat in the attached restaurant for dinner at all, we ate instead in the multitude of restaurants that Durham has to offer. (See my reviews of the 3 we used.)
However, Breakfast was amazing! Everything was on offer, from cereal and fresh fruit, to pastries and a full cooked english breakfast. It was superb and so was the service from the staff.
There is only one problem and it is NOT the hotels fault. Across the road is a night club called Missoula and it is NOISEY!!! Ask for a room that doesn't face it.
I love Durham and I will be returning for a city break in the future and when I do, I will be staying at the City Centre Premier Inn.

Room Tip: Rooms that don't face the night club Missoula across the road will be quieter. But with the wind...

Stayed here for four nights, the rooms are, as you expect, clean, functional, and slept very well each night. The restaurant was good too, wide range of food, and the best thing about this was the staff, always friendly, professional, and added personal service by recognising you, your name, your room, and added expenses to your room perfectly
