Description: The Spread Eagle offers diners a perfect balance of old and new with Head Chef, Richard Cave-Toye's accomplished menu of modern classic British cuisine served in the hotel's historic restaurant. The candlelit restaurant with its huge inglenook fireplace is a wonderful venue for every occasion from a romantic dinner for two to a family lunch. During the summer months lunch is also served in the more relaxed atmosphere of the Conservatory and Terrace. On finer days, the hotel's inner courtyard offers a discreet spot for al fresco dining. Private dining for parties or business meetings is available in The Spread Eagle's banqueting rooms.

We brought my husbands Aunt, it was her 86th birthday, here for afternoon tea, Everything was spot on, the food, the teas the staff, especially our lovely table by the log fire. The Vintage Cream Tea is £21/head but worth every penny!

It's the sort of place where I later felt very guilty for not leaving a tip (it's not easy getting an 86 year old any where), the staff thoroughly deserved one!

We'll be back!

Having been to the Spread Eagle restaurant and bar for years we had a very disappointing meal there recently.A main course was very much below what one would have expected but the main difficulty was the restaurant manager who, having insisted there was nothing wrong, did offer us coffee and petite fours as compensation, but then proceeded to overcharge my husband not once but twice at the end of our meal!

The Spread Eagle Hotel is apparently the oldest coaching inn in England and it looks pretty good and the location is excellent being in a quiet area with lovely building just off the high street. We ordered coffee and after quite a long wait two cups of cappuccino arrived with biscuits. At £4.50 each not cheap but a nice place to be. The coffee was simply awful, undrinkable, bitter, nasty even with several sugars still horrible (in fact even worse) asked if I could have much weaker coffee and two cups were brought in, just as nasty. Undrinkable. From the restaurant manager (I think he was) who brought the coffee in, no smile, no comment, nothing. Not very impressive at all.

Having ate here several times before and overall had god experiences it seemed like a safe bet when organising a fairly large family get together and had felt that no-one would be disappointed.
The reality however was that the food was nothing special, servings especially starters were on the small side, they ran out of some things and the time it took for them to serve and clear courses was absolutely appalling and unfortunately meant that there was no time left to do other things before everybody made their way home.
Towards the end of the meal one member of staff pointed out some sharp corners on cupboards/panelling and said that having been warned about them it was our own fault if one of the children hurt themselves on them.

Disappointed in this hotel for Sunday lunch only a fixed 3 course menu at £28.50 and if you did not wish 3 courses then there was no option but to pay the full price even though you just had a main. The a la cartel menu was not on offer. Service very slow and one starter incorrect but we kept it anyway due to the wait. Shame as my sister said it used to be her favourite hotel, she now says she would not go back. A family gathering but a disappointing afternoon.
