Upon arrival at Cromford we spent over 20 mins trying to find the property as there was no property number provided just a cottage name and street name, upon contacting the owner the property number was advised, we cannot help but feel if the property name is not going to be displayed (owner claimed the did not want local residents to know if was a rental) the house number should be informed to the guests or at least displayed on the property.
Once inside the property we were greeted by a strong scent of damp (since been advised the house next door had a leak - this should have been advised to us out of courtesy as damp can affect some respiratory conditions), upon looking around the property we were disturbed to find, dirty bedding, a lamp that did not work, half eaten pack of biscuits left behind from previous guests in a jar along with other biscuits meant for new guests (owner advised this could be easily missed by the cleaners - not an acceptable response in our opinion especially in the COVID climate) mould and a rotten sewing needle in the bathroom, a sharp nail protruding from a door bar and not even a pint of milk as a welcome gesture.
Due to the slow communication from the owner (confirmation and entry email received @ 22.44 the evening before despite being told we would receive the information 48 hours in advance - owner tried to blame us asking for early entry) and out of respect we did not leave feedback in the guestbook as we wanted to give the owner opportunity to respond, but sadly the lack of responsibility to concerns raised left us with no alternative but to leave the feedback we have and to make others aware.
Despite the lack of hygiene we managed to have a comfortable stay at Toodles Cottage and made the most of our break by being out of the property for as many hours of the day as possible and this is the only reason this is an average score rather than poor.
Do not let this cottage put you off visiting the beautiful Peak District I am sure not all rental owners have such lack of hygiene standards especially in the current climate.
Everything was well thought out and lots of lovely little touches. Anya was quick to respond to any messages.
