This landmark is characterised by the childhood-home and the grave of the artist: beginning and finish; but the description of the life story , the presence of memorabilia and original furniture, curiosities about his literary production are very poor.
Laura teaches many of Pirandello’s plays in her classes and we were very pleased to be able to see this museum that houses many of his personal items.
The Casa is beautiful and is on a cliff in Villaseta overlooking Porto Empedocle. I believe Pirandello was born in this house but as his family’s fortunes fell, the house was lost in one of the many tragedies that colored his life. In spite of that Pirandello visited this house throughout his lifetime and was especially fond of sitting at the end of the trail overlooking the sea under the great Pine tree. This is where Pirandello’s ashes were ultimately buried. That tree was destroyed some years ago by lightening but a section of the tree still remains by his monument and a new pine tree has been planted.
There is another house in the city of Agrigento where Pirandello actually lived. Not surprisingly it’s on Via Luigi Pirandello. Laura and I were walking down the via S. Francesco d’Assisi and didn’t realize the name of the street had changed. We stopped in a square to listen to the children sing Christmas carols and there next to us was a plaque set in the wall of the house saying this was the house where Pirandello had actually lived.
It is important to remember that Pirandello is immensely popular and is celebrated all around Italy. Thus there are many monuments to him and many buildings named after him. I notice that at least one of the pictures attached to this site is not of the Casa Natale di Luigi Pirandello but a picture of the Teatro Luigi Pirandello located in the Piazza Luigi Pirandello at the top of the via Atenea in Agrigento.
Almost a mini version of La Scala in Milan. The puppets of Pirandello are fantastic! I only saw these for a short period of time as it was almost siesta. If you are into the arts, well worth a visit but make sure you arrive early or after siesta time.
I must confess that I had read very little Pirandello and all the books of Andrea Camilleri down the road as it were. As a spur to read some more and provide a few classy pieces of name dropping this little museo is worth a visit. However if, like us, you rely totally on public transport, you may well have a pretty steep climb if you have taken the bus down to the port. Check the times!
