This Roman Amphitheatre is still a testament to the Romans ability to build and preserve their architecture. Its an amazing theater that dates back to the first century.

Dating from the 1st century the theatre remained buried for centuries under the ground. It has been restored so that its original structure is totally visible. The Amphitheatre was a great space also for the gladiatorial games...

Much history here. It's a nice place to rest on the solid ancient seating, contemplating what must have taken place in bygone times. The theater is located right across from the tourist office. The first century Roman Theater was excavated in 1891. It is still used for special shows. Spoletto is a great town to do some walking. A spectacle took place while we were there. Many costumed locals and some on horseback added to the scene. This is one of our favorite hilltop villages. Many restaurants. We had a fine lunch at the Festival del Due Monde—The Festival of Two Worlds.

This is a small Roman theater that has been reasonably well preserved. It is outdoors and easily walked. You might imagine the ancient Spoletans collecting to be entertained by an athletic event, or maybe the ancient version of the Rolling Stones. It does not look big enough to have exposed Christians to the lions. There is also a good small museum attached with some fascinating and well-described artifacts from Roman times. This site is well worth an hour or so of your time if you enjoy ancient history at all.

2000 years old and still being used. This is worth the long climb up to the top of Spoleto on its own. Throw in some great nearby restaurants and spectacular views. A must see if you're in the region.
