We stayed here one night on a walking tour in the Aravis mountains. A nice, clean, simple hotel, very good locally based food. We felt very welcome. Lovely view of the mountains from the room and the terrace of the hotel.

We were warmly welcomed, and even though they do not speak English we managed by body language and lots of laughter to make ourselves understood.

The rooms are the way you hope hotel rooms are in the mountains; "cottagy" and cosy, yet clean and comfortable. Our room had a balcony from which you could see the spectacular mountains.

We had the 4 course menu they offered, and we were far from disappointed. The food was delicious and so hot it was still boiling as it was put before us.

The place is quiet and perfect for us who had been mountain hiking from village to village. The area is perfect in summer for hiking and biking.

We've lost count of the times we've stayed here… at least 10! So why is it so much better than its low rating? What are its pros and cons?

This place is out of town, heading up to the Plateau des Confins. It's very French. It's unusual to find guests who are not French. The owners, Mr et Madame Gallay are friendly and helpful, but speak little English. The food is simple country cooking, but absolutely fresh, homemade and delicious, with helpings to satisfy the biggest appetite, however dinner isn't served until 8,15pm, which is a little late if you've been working up an appetite skiing all day. Solution: beer and crisps at the bar first!

The ambiance is quiet. The bar area ( free wi-fi) is simple. The rooms and furniture are very dated, but the beds are comfortable, and the entire establishment is always spotlessly clean.
Stunning views from the rooms at the front, but no lift to get you and your bags to the third floor, which isn't a problem for us.

Ultimately you stay here for location, escaping the crowds and the traffic congestion in town. Step out the door and directly onto the XC ski tracks, and this is the most beautiful plateau to ski on. Snowshoeing also wonderful.

Now for the downhillers, you catch the 9am bus directly outside the hotel, or drive the half mile or so to the car park at La Balme to start your day. On the downside, that's the only direct bus... leave later and you'll have to take a bus into town and start from the lifts there. However there are frequent direct buses from both La Balme and town at end of day back to the hotel.

Remember, up on the plateau, there is a great cafeteria, and a lovely restaurant, but no nightlife whatsoever, but when you've been XC skiing all day in XC paradise- stuffed yourself with great food and reasonably priced wine, you're too tired for apres ski!

This place is authentically French, in a great family tradition. It's not for you if you can't see past the dated bedroom furniture, but the friendliness, location and food more than compensate.

Room Tip: ask for rooms with view 'sur La Chaine d'Aravis'…glorious!

We stayed here for a last-minute New Year break - 2adults and 3 grown-up children for 4 nights. The hotel is simple 2* family-style with about 20 rooms. The location is about 4km outside La Clusaz. It is very close to a major cross-country skiing area! also with lots of snowshoe/hiking trails in the surrounding area. Downhill skiers can use the frequent free shuttle bus into town to reach the gondolas to the slopes.

Breakfast (9 euros) was copious and of good quality. Dinner was excellent value (4 course menus from 15 euros) and well-served. Drinks are also very reasonably priced. There are several other restaurants within walking distance - we enjoyed Le Foly, about 1 km away from the hotel.

The proprietors of the hotel are friendly and helpful, maintaining a very high standard of cleanliness throughout the hotel.

Free wifi is available in the bar area and also in the restaurant. There is ample free parking.
