Is Arenas Resort
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Narbolia
Reviewed 17 July 2017

I almost never write anything in comments, but now I feel that if I don't leave a comment I would be a part of the gang persuading Is Arenas is a 5 star hotel.

The food. Is Arenas is real bad at food. When you are a guest it seems like you are not in Italy so famous for delicious food:
1) there is absolutely no room service. It makes life of families with small children (who cannot go out to dinners) absolutely uncomfortable. You cannot order anything to eat and try finding scarce opportunities the hotel has to offer;
2) dinners are by far not tasty (our friends decided to leave the hotel next morning when they understood the tasty italian food is not something they would get in Is Arenas);
3) restaurant (rather cafe) by the sea seems like a not tasty kiosk run by a couple of local guys;
4) breakfast is a rather 3 star rating with lines of people waiting for new cups, plates and staff not talking english (a real mess when in action);
5) besides it's not tasty and badly planned the biggest bummer in eating at the hotel actually is dirty dishes and cups. Out of 5-6 times we went either to breakfast or ate during lunch all of the times we received dirty cups, plates and teapots. After several tries (and after our friends left because of food and service) we decided to leave the hotel and find a proper 5 star hotel.

The beach: during our stay out of 7 days 4 days it was covered in piles of seaweed so you couldn't go into the water, the rest of the days the wind was delivering big waves so you couldn't go into the water either. Walking to the beach with a stroller is not an option because of the pavement. You'll have to leave it behind and walk for a kilometer or so.

There are a few great beaches nearby that the hotel doesn't inform properly the guests of (Mari Ermi and Is Arutas). Both of the beaches have unique quartz sand (big granulas size of rice), clear blue waters and is worth traveling to Sardinia to see. In Mari Ermi you are able to rent umbrellas and sunbeds plus there are a couple of restaurants open by the sea. In Is Arutas views are stunning, but the beach is not organized (no services available).

The cleaning. The only proper thing maids are capable of is changing towels. We had a plate with remains of ice cream and a couple of empty prosecco bottles and glasses during all of the stay nicely arranged on the table in the living room waiting for us to leave.

Front desk. When I asked what penalties for canceling the hotel the front desk manager assured me they would charge all of the stay (while it was only one night penalty). If you are trying to leave, the staff will not care for you or will not try to mend your experience.

The property is located in a beautiful pine forest. The area of the hotel is very nice. The property part of the hotel is in decent condition: rooms are newly done, spacious and comfortable. The solution for the owner of the hotel is clear-cut: fire the Mira Hotels management company!

I would never recommend Is Arenas to anyone!

Room Tip: Near houses 8-9-10 there is a kid's center where the hotel starts kids disco from 9 to 9-30

Dear Guest,

thank you for staying at Is Arenas Resort.

We are sorry to read your holiday report. Regarding your comments about food, first, we would like to apologize if the service was not as you wished, be sure that we will share your notes with the Food & Beverage Manager, to prevent that this kind of inconvenience may be repeated in the future. Let us point out that we daily try to offer an interesting combination of Sardinian, Italian and Mediterranean flavors, which results into an innovative, refined and healthy menu, because we believe that local gastronomy reveals the essence of an area and eating well benefits both body and mind. About the Beach Club, we want to underline that it is definitely an eating and relaxing place, where you can enjoy different experiences: by day, it works as a beach bar-restaurant, inthe evening it hosts aperitifs. The cuisine on offer is light and natural during the day, with sandwiches, salads, cold dishes, fruit, ice cream, tasty cold drinks, juices and cocktails. For Lunch, the Beach Club becomes also a barbecue restaurant, offering the catch of the day, excellent Italian meat, burgers, veggie burgers and grilled vegetables and cheeses. When evening rolls around instead, it’s aperitif time, with a selection of cocktails, long drinks and wines accompanied by crisps, nibbles and olives.
Regarding our Staff at the Beach Club rather than throughout the resort, we need to point out that they are not all local but we have an international Team that comes from Italy and from various European countries: everybody speaks at least three different languages, we pay great attention to continuously train them because our aim is always to welcome at best our Guests. We are really sorry to also read your words about our Reception Staff who is constantly committed to identify and meet the needs of our Guests, suggesting what to do, what to see in the surroundings, organizing for them excursions by bike, off-road and by boat. However, we apologize if someone of them has not been able to make you feel like at home.

Besides, let us apologize about your comment on dirty crockery, we have already shared this note with the Food&Beverage Manager and the General Manger too, to avoid that similar events couldn’t happen again.

For what concerns our beach, and about “seaweed” we would like to point that this kind of algae is called Posidonia, it is a Mediterranean Sea plant that makes this site unique, protected by international standards, its presence is an index of high environmental quality.

Therefore, we would like to thank you for your travel notes and we want you to know that critical comments, above all, help us improving our quality standards.

Best Regards,

MIRA Hotels Management.

Overall we enjoyed our stay but there were a lot of things that could be improved.
Pros: Newer resort. Rooms were nice, but basic with tile and stone. Food was good at the restaurants. Private beach with chairs and umbrellas. Quiet, pretty area. Most of the staff is friendly and helpful. Maid service was 2 times a day and towels were continuously replenished. Towels for beach and pool were available for use at each location. Fresh water shower at pool and beach. Pool was nice, clean and had a jet area. Nice robes provided. Shuttle to beach was readily available and we never had to walk. Air conditioning was good and easy to use.
Cons:
Wifi was terrible in the rooms, pretty non-existent but you could go near the lobby and get it. Food and drinks, including mini-bar and lunch were overpriced. Parking is not super close, is about 200 meters, however there is a small lot in front that you can use for loading. Fridge did not have freezer. Curtains were old with holes. Was clean overall but could have used a more detailed cleaning. Gym, not accessible unless you schedule an appointment with trainer that charges a fee. No laundry facilities like listed only expensive laundry service that we did not use. Pool bar staff not very friendly, although the rest of the staff was nice. Only one trashcan in our room that was in the bathroom and it was tiny. Did not seem to have recycling on site for all the plastic bottles. Beach was nice but had a lot of seaweed. The strip of beach that pertains to the hotel is about half a mile long but none of the proprietors have bothered to pick up the plastic trash that accumulates on beaches nowadays. So sad - stop using plastic people, it's ruining our earth! Breakfast buffet is hectic to say the least. Too many people and not enough staff. At dusk giant flying beetles would appear and lots of bees or wasps, but there are lots of trees so kind of au'natural. Would have been nice to have some suitcase racks to open our suitcases on and a drying rack on the patio for all the wet bathing suits and towels. Recommend mini market in town north of resort (S'Archittu) to get water and snacks so as not to pay for overpriced resort items. Overall the hotel is not a 5 star but perhaps a 4.

Dear Guest,
thank you for staying at Is Arenas Resort and for the time you spent writing this detailed review.

We are happy to read your appreciation about some aspects of the holiday experience, such as our rooms, equipped in a sophisticated but sober style that is well-collected with the surrounding nature and the silence: Thank you for your words about our pool area, the right alternative to the sea, nestled in a great setting, where you can relax yourself surrounded by Sardinian nature and peace.

Regarding our Staff, we pay great attention to continuously train it because our aim is always to welcome at best and to help our Guests; we apologize if someone of our team has not been able to make you feel like at home.

We also glad to read your comment about our private beach: between the green of the pine trees and the crystal blue of the sea, the beach of fine grey sand with hints of pink and gold is the gift that the wild Nature of the western coast makes to the Guests of the Resort.

Thank you for your suggestions: be sure that also critical notes help us to do better, enrich our offer and always try to give every day the best service to our Guests.

Concerning Wi-Fi, we would like to inform you that bringing the connection in this area, in a wide pine forest, it has been difficult and still today we are working hard to develop the internet connection to extend it in all the Resort. By the way, let us apologize for the inconvenience.

We are sorry though that the unavailability of some services may have limited your holiday experience, but our Staff is always at Guests disposal, to give you the opportunity to enjoy your stay.

Referring to the beach seaweed, please let us point out that you are talking about Posidonia oceanica, commonly known as Neptune grass or Mediterranean tapeweed, an angiosperm plant (not an algae) adapted to live under water. It is a vital element to preserve the Mediterranean's ecosystems and also balance the presence of CO2 in the sea and atmosphere. We try every day to collect it and move it from Guests sight, because we can’t do anything else. Thank you for the plastic trash suggestion: surely we will follow it, to avoid such a bad visual on the beach.

About your comment related to the massive presence of insects, we want to underline first, our location, a natural protected oasis. Let us inform you that to reduce the presence of insects in the area surrounding the Hotel, we have adopted some specific measures. Some member of our Staff is dedicated to the monitoring and “ecological” capture of insects such as bees, wasps and horns. As you certainly know, the brutal disinfection in not allowed, because they are considered fundamental for the ecosystem balance. However, please accept our apologies for the inconvenience caused by their presence.

Finally, be sure that all your notes will be shared with our Management to improve our standards.
Best regards,
MIRA Hotels Management

Fantastic location with both access to the sea and a very nice pool area. Rooms are located in small villas on a vast area. Being a non-golfer, I cannot comment on the golf facilities.

Here's the improvement areas:

- ground of the pool made of rough stone: after extensive pool sessions with the kids, the whole family had a couple of "row" toes due to the ground out of which the pool consists which is too rough for barefoot.

- restaurant: while the quality of the food is above average, the whole service personne is totally disorganised. 12+ service people with no dedicated area of tables to serve and with no to little own responsabities while only 2 "maître de table" are habilitated to take orders and allocate seating to guests. This all results in some chaos which goes beyond the "romantuc funny level" one is willing to accept during holidays. This needs to be improved. Too many hornets that fight for food on the tables for breakfast and lunch. Nice wine card with very acceptable prices.

- accomodation: nicely furnitured but cleaning needs to be improved: our suite had a lot of spider webs.

All in all this could be a real 5***** if the restaurant service and the room cleaning would be ok.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for choosing Is Arenas Resort as location of your holiday.

We agree with you about the wonderful place where the resort is nestled, in a wild natural pine forest blended with 6 km of unspoiled beach, wet by a crystal-clear water. Our room design reflects the purity of nature and silence that surrounds it, in a sophisticated but sober style; also, the pool was designed to let you be surrounded by nature and be restored by its peace.

Regarding your suggestions we would like to thank you because critical notes are mostly what help us to do better and enrich our standard services.

For your comment on restaurant service, we regret if it didn’t meet your expectations; we also apologize if some of our Staff may not have been polite enough, since we pay great attention train it continuously.

We have already shared your words with the General Manager to be sure that this kind of inconvenience may not be repeated in the future.

Our best regards,
MIRA Hotels Management

Do not be fooled by a 5* listing - this hotel is certainly not!

The setting of Is Arenas is fabulous, beautiful and very clean - so far so good. However, our first room in the garden was dark with a disgusting rusty sink in the kitchenette and no bath, just a shower (bath was supposedly meant to be in that room). There was no hot water. We changed rooms, much better but the beds were incredibly uncomfortable, with plastic mattress covers (as you would give a child) the ones that make you sweat all night.

As someone has previously mentioned the furnishings (which look great in the brochure) are bland and very corporate. No coffee/tea making facilities as mentioned in hotel information.

Breakfast was extremely good and the rest of the food was terrible. My smoked salmon salad was made with iceberg lettuce and tinned olives and was 18 euros! We were half-board and most of the food was either heavily salted or really overcooked. My husband could have made a pair of shoes with the beef he was given one night. The young waiters and waitresses were charming and helpful, the Maitre D was rude and unpleasant, was that because we were British? he certainly gave us the opinion that he was not pleased to have us there. He was like that to several other guests and someone else has also commented upon his manner.

We asked to speak to the Manager but that never happened. The gym consisted of a static cycle and a few hand weights but you could only use this if the Spa staff were not giving a treatment as if they were, the spa door was locked.

The fine dining restaurant was not open.

The beach bar was shabby looking and not an appealing place to eat.

Mira Hotels had better wake up and look at some of these reviews to see what people are saying - it it a lovely peaceful place and could be wonderful but has serious Management issues.

I accidentally left my Pashmina there and asked if they could return it to me - a light item, not heavy. But no, they would give it to a Courier if I organised that myself - so much for Customer Service and Satisfaction!!

Dear Guest,
thank you for choosing Is Arenas Resort.

Thank you for your words about our setting: it is exclusive, in a reserved oasis very far away from the daily life chaos. Is Arenas is a protected area, with a pine forest, where the characteristic fragrance of Mediterranean vegetation fills the air.
We are happy to know that, thanks to our Reception Staff, always at Guests’ disposal, the second room met your expectations. We want you to know that our rooms reflect the surrounding landscape with a design that combines aspects like space, silence, nature and harmony with an elegant style. However, we are sorry if the plastic cover of the mattress limited your sleep; but let us point out that each facility inside our rooms is new and environmentally friendly. However, we accept your prompt suggestion, about your disappointment of the rust in the washbasin, let us apologize, we will share it with the Housekeeping Manager to improve our quality standards.
Concerning the breakfast service, we want to underline that it is served as a rich buffet and includes international dishes alongside local specialties, for a delicious, nutritious and healthy first meal, preferring only local and genuine products.
Referring to your comments about our Staff, especially our waiters, we are sorry to know that some of them may not have been polite enough, please accept all our apologies.
We are sorry though that the unavailability of services like coffee and tea machine may have limited your holiday experience, let us point out that our Staff is always at Guests disposal, thanks to the room service, to give you the opportunity to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea directly in the comfort of your suite. Besides we regret if our dining offer didn’t meet your expectations we apologize for the inconvenience and we want you to know that we have already shared your comments with the Food & Beverage Manager, also to better understand what happened.
Regarding the SPA, we need to point out that the Center is always open from 10 to 12 am; from 2 to 8 pm. Is Arenas SPA offers a varied daily program of wellness treatments and holistic courses for all guests: in particular, the "Zen Programme" provides a series of activities aimed at eliminating stress and promoting relaxation. All guests can also enjoy a relaxation area, three massage cabins with private shower and the Turkish bath.
Concerning the pashmina, please let us collect more details about this inconvenience; in the meanwhile, accept our apologies for the answer received.
Finally, we would like to inform you that mostly critical notes encourage us to improve our standards every day.

Our best regards,
MIRA Hotels Management

Setting
Wonderful- beautiful pine forest - long sandy quiet beach

Rooms
We had a garden suite which was spacious but rather dark and the furnishings were dullsville and corporate- not a single picture on the walls!
Excellent maid service - everything was spotless.

Dining
Night one was faulty towers - hours of waiting for terrible food. But things improved and service became much better. Sadly the food remained pretty average.
Dining outside is very elegant - shame about the insects and wasps though - but you are surrounded by pine forest.

Staff

Hugely friendly and willing. Couldn't fault the attitude though younger wait staff needed better training sometimes.

All in all we enjoyed ourselves - and the staff and the setting made the place really. I think though with a bit more attention to detail this resort could go from good to great!
