This is a family run hotel, where staff try their best, but are quite stern. Its not a chain or big name hotel, so don't expect that level of unifornimity you'd expect in a chain or bigger hotel. This is very much a bed & breakfast that's fractionally lower in price than hotels within the old town walls.

Rooms are a mixed bag, depending on where you are in the building. Rooms on the front, are noisy due to the proximity of the road. Rooms on the back, are quieter. There's a lot of rooms crammed in so the shapes are often odd too: its shower only I think for all the rooms. No room has a 'view' so don't bother asking for one.

The old town is very close, so expect bell-ringing early mornings and especially Sunday, no room will avoid the sound of bells peeling.

Its a very simple buffet breakfast of help yourself. Old town has a selection of good restaurants, lots of Italian it seems - but shut their kitchens pretty early, so don't expect food available late into the night.

There is hotel free Wifi - but a unique code is handed to each guest separately, and only on production of your passport. You will be brusquely refused a password, if you don't hand over a passport. And the low Mb allowances, probably mitigates the risk of sharing your code with someone. That said, its pretty fast as each floor has its own signal box.

Parking is limited at the back, on a first come first served basis.

I slept well as I like soft mattresses, but many of my friends found one very soft pillow and soft beds, uncomfortable to sleep. They seem to have the same mattress as when I stayed in 2014 - which was a bit disconcerting.

They lock the front door at night, so if you check in late, expet to read instructions on the outside of the building to get your room key. And once checked in, your room key has a front door key. Front desk is not manned all hours.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the BACK of the hotel if you want peace and quiet and an open window at night.

Spent a night here August 2011. Location good, despite being on an irritating one-way ring road. Price was Ok, about 70€ /dbl room w/bathroom. Reception staff were very friendly. Parking was at the rear, and the staff also kindly explained on-road parking alternatives, where was Ok to leave a vehicle, until what time, etc.
Our front facing room was on the first (or was it second?) floor, it looked out over the inner ring road which was fairly quiet. Bed was clean and fairly comfortable. Breakfast included and was OK/average - not much hot food.

Now for the negatives: the room was in dire need of a refit. The wallpaper was tatty, furniture mismatched and shabby, the curtains useless and threadbare - we were worken literally at the crack of dawn by the light. The bathroom was also showing its age badly. There was a guest handbook with page after page of threats of dire penalties for those unfortunates who lose their key (including photocopied articles on the subject), or, even more unfortunately, who 'wet the bed with any kind of fluid' ! (that's a quote - enough said). Totally unnecessary.

There was bizarre decoration of dubious taste throughout the hotel. In our room, a crappy old flag hung on one wall. There was even a glass display cabinet on one landing brimming with hideous ornaments. Similarly, the breakfast room had yet more tacky knick-knacks on the window sills. All this tasteless clutter gives the impression that the place is run by some kind of crank, despite the good service and warm welcome. Overall, for the money, I'd say this hotel was average.
