My wife and I spent our first holiday without the children at the Hotel Mirabeau this year. Room - spacious, excellent balcony to sit out on, comfortable bed, helpful to have small fridge in room, housekeeping daily and room kept clean and fresh.
Hotel staff - everyone friendly and anxious to help; we didn't trouble the concierge much as we were mostly there to walk; but we needed a couple of things with room sorting on the first day and they were dealt with efficiently and effectively, and with a smile.
Kosher facilities: Brothers Meier and Herschel and their families cannot be faulted; very much three star, not five star, but that's exactly what it says on the tin - and although it's three star they're definitely three big and shiny stars; if you want cordon bleu and six choices at every course, go somewhere else and pay a lot more; but the food is done thoughtfully and generously; the basic is basic, but they put thought into little extras that make a difference, and they are anxious to help people with special requirements where they reasonably can. The arrangement of providing hot and varied breakfast and inviting you to make a packed lunch from the breakfast buffet works brilliantly - you wouldn't want to come back from a day's walking in the middle for lunch, and there is nowhere to buy a kosher lunch in the mountains! This way you eat a delightful and hearty breakfast, make a couple of delicious rolls for lunch, and set out for the day, coming back for a helpfully early dinner at 7 pm. Dinner is four courses plus salads, again a trifle on the hearty side; but my wife and I have very different tastes and we were both able to find enough to keep us happy, which says quite a lot for the arrangements. The food on Shabbos was outstanding (with a lovely shabbos atmosphere, which the host families went to great trouble to ensure); lunch was particularly impressive. The 24-hour drinks and snacks bar was exactly what it said, and was well looked-after so it was always a pleasure to use.
Hotel facilities: There aren't any, really. No pool, no garden and no table tennis or similar. There is a trampoline for the children in the front. But there is an adequate comfortable lounge. If you want your children to find lots of activities in the hotel itself, this is not for you.
Shul etc; shul excellently run by Herschel. Davening times fine for holiday, and a couple of times additional minyonim were arranged for people who wanted or a compromise in the advertised time to suit people. Impressively stocked beis medrash
for those who wanted to use it, open and quiet all day.
Atmosphere: friendly and relaxing; on Shabbos there were a couple of activities for those who wanted, but no pressure; if you want to be left alone you will be. Staff and guests friendly but not intrusive. Just what we wanted for a relaxing break. Majority of guests Chassidishe - shul conducted accordingly; but welcoming towards those of other persuasions.
Area: For walking and scenery fantastic. Cable car within 2 minutes. Hotel price includes local pass with free buses and free cable cares (saving you quite a bit per day) and free outdoor activities for younger children (mini golf, pedallo, cars, etc.) within a couple of minutes. Lakes for gentle walks same distance. The local scenery is spectacular. Local tourist information was really helpful and found us gentle walks for our level. Area not really suitable if you cannot cope with reasonably steep up and down hill walks as there is little on the flat except the smallish lakes by the hotel. But even going up in the cable cars and sitting in a café at the top of one of them would make for a relaxing break. We managed some gentle walks up and down and found the countryside stunning and the air and peace just what we wanted. Possibly ghastly in winter unless you actually want to ski (does anyone really …) - but fantastic for us in summer with no queues for cable cars or buses to speak of, and the area mops up a lot of people so you are walking in solitude most of the time. Plenty of shops for buying daft things at ridiculous prices if that's what you like; also supermarkets within a couple of minutes of hotel for buying sensible things at reasonable prices if that's more your style.
