This was our 17th visit to Hotel Palue, so you might gather that we like it here. The new wing, along with the total refurbishment of the existing building, and the addition of the gym and incredible spa suite have turned a place that was always great- (beautiful rooms, directly on the cross country tracks, bus stop to the slopes outside, hotel minibus to Corviglia every morning, stunning food, nothing's too much trouble attitude)- into a place that is, frankly, as good as you could ever want.

This place is especially magical at Christmas- with the hotel organising carols and mulled wine in the woods opposite, and a hike (optional) to the alpine cheese hut for fondue.

Pontresina is an outdoor paradise. In winter there's cross- country skiing ( the best in Europe in my opinion), alpine skiing ( with reduced cost lift pass as hotel guest), sledging, winter walking, even ice climbing; in summer there's the hiking, climbing, road and mountain biking amidst spectacular alpine scenery.. so when you come, do yourselves a favour and stay here. Gerold and his team run a great hotel. Huge underground garage, ski room with waxing facilities, bike workshop.

This place is classy, modern, friendly, and the food's great...and just a few miles from all the glitz, fur coats and champagne of St. Moritz.

We just returned from five nights at Hotel Palu over the New Years Holiday. We stayed in the newer wing of the hotel in a large room with terrace and view of the Morterasch glacier. Very comfortable beds and sitting area (we were three so they added an extra bed) with good storage space for all our winter clothes and ski equipment. From the minute we arrived until the day we left the staff went out of their way to make our stay wonderful. The hotel is just a short 5 minute outside the center of Pontresina and you are on the bus line to the nearby downhill slopes of Lagalb and Diavolezza and to the train station. If you have a car there is a huge garage - very welcomed in the winter months. But the highlight for us was the food. We choose half pension and were so glad we did. Breakfast is a hearty buffet of hot and cold dishes. The dinner menu changed every night and would make any foodie very happy. The young chef has innovative twists on traditional dishes. Thank goodness we were cross country skiing everyday so that we had room for all the courses. New Year's eve dinner was a four hour affair complete with a fire show outside. We will definitely be going back in the summer for biking.

Considering the location so close to St Moritz this hotel is excellent value for money .The rooms and all be refurbished to a high standard and the staff are very friendly and helpful. There is a new underground car park which is great for the winter.Half board is especially good value with a good choice of local dishes and reasonable open wine.Very hard to beat !

Room Tip: Some rooms have and outside balcony

Value for money might be hard to find in Switzerland, but I found it at the Hotel Palü, rooms are perhaps a bit small, but very clean with everything you need there, the bar, as well as the restaurant are outstanding, best of all is the very friendly staff, bikeclothes dirty at the end of the day, no problem put them outside of your room and you will find them clean early next morning, with no extra cost, all in all a wonderfull experience

We stayed at the Palue for 4 nights in March, 2014 while on a cross country ski vacation (including the Engadin Skimarathon). We were very happy with our choice. Our room was lovely and had a great view up the valley towards Diavolezza and Bernina Pass. The views on the other side of the building would have been just as good. We chose half board and the food was always excellent. The bar and restaurant areas were very impressive. We liked everything about the Palue.
The cross country ski trails and winter hiking trails went right by the hotel so we didn't even use our car for 3 days. On the morning of the Skimarathon, Gerold transported the skiers to St. Moritz by the hotel van at 6:45am and 7:15 am to catch buses to the start at Maloja. This was a very nice service because, otherwise, we would have taken the 6am public bus and arrived at Maloja at least 2 hours before the start (it was very cold before the start and would have been unpleasant to stand around that long).
Pontresina is a wonderful base for a cross country skiing and winter hiking vacation (I sure that it's a wonderful base for a downhill skiing vacation, too, but we didn't have time). The Engadin Skimarathon is a great choice for a recreational cross country skier who wants to do a big loppet (the weather is usually good, the scenery is spectacular, the ski is fun and not too hard and there are lots of other recreational skiers so no worries about not fitting in). I'm already looking forward to next time.
