Wanted desperately to go to the place and eat their lovely cheese, based on other reviews on tripadvisor. But mistakenly thought that Pontresina was the station behind which it was situated.Actually Morteratsch is the station where it is,NOT PONTRESINA.It is an hour away by walking/20 min. by bus from Pontresina station.

The "Heutaler" of this cheesery is certainly one of the best Swiss hard cheeses. You can also buy it at the "Sennerei" in the midst of Pontresina.

We went for lunch the other day to the Alp Schaukäserei in Morteratsch. It is always a nice place to go on a sunny day. It is a good place to go with the family, children and dogs have a good time there. We had two very generous plates of mixed cheese and hams which were excellent. Also the bread was fresh and so tasty. we had to ask for plates for us which did not come as expected. Service was nice and the toilets have just be renovated and are really well done. One can also stay and look how they make cheese but we came just in between two presentations.

The Schaukaserei is right by the railway station, and offers a wonderful brunch - this needs to be booked the day before, but is definitely worth planning for.
There is a large selection of cheese and meat, as well as various different types of bread, all lovingly arranged.
We saw that most people who get off the train or wait for the train just go straight to the restaurant by the train station, but this hidden gem just behind the restaurant is worth going the extra few hundred yards for !

The Alp-Schaukäserei Morteratsch, near the beginning of the Morterartsch glacier walk above Pontresina, is an amazing place. They actually make the Heutaler cheese here. It looks like a little cabin, with some tables and benches outside (great place to have lunch). But in that cabin, there is the greatest secret of this planet, if not the universe. There is a cauldron, just one, where the rich milk from some 50 'ladies of the alp meadow' (Wiesendamen, i.e. cows) of Bernina, at the entrance of the Val da Fain (=Heutal [valley of hay]) is turned into Heutaler cheese. The ladies of the alp eat grass of course, but enriched by herbs and flowers resulting in a cheese that is completely matchless in its fragrance and tang, and after a little while it starts tingling the tongue in a way that would be difficult to describe.
