Exceptional

Review of Kiulu Farmstay
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 29 Jun 2020via mobile
We stayed there for 1 night sometime in June and absolutely loved it. My family, especially the kids had a lovely time staying there. Mr Saidi was exceptionally welcoming and even went above and beyond when he told stories to the kids to keep them busy while we were packing. The welcoming beverages was sangat sangat Sedap! My wife especially really loved the sambal that was prepared for us. Very delicious mix with my sister's nasi goreng terjun. Even though the he wifi was down but it gave us opportunity to really disconnect and just enjoy the moment. Few days after, Mr Saidi contacted me to update about the suspension bridge that has been repaired at the place after I expressed my concern about the bridge's condition. Mr Saidi, you are my hero! 10/10 would visit again.

We showed up without being expected and they manage to host a visit for us in a very diligent way ..this is the nice part
Because of the non expected visit no lunch was ready but that was king of our fault
They organize a few activities - rice grinding , pipe blowing and we went on a short tour to the owner village. Nice but nothing extraordinary over 30 minutes.
I had asked before how we will be charged and were told you will see upon arrival at the village. Warm welcome by the family with fruits, music and dance and photos. Then the owner asked st which hotel we stayed and looked at my wife’s bracelet and was preparing the move to charge us big time, all this with a big smile of course
125 ringgits for each person !! - we were 3.
We paid as we did not want to create any concern and even though we appreciate we have a higher standard of living in Europe, this was just outrageous for Borneo (plus we had to pay for our own transportation). This guy is a crook , do not go there and better spend your money somewhere else. I am sure all is business is run the same way. Good thing we had better experience with other Borneo people who did not only see us as wallets on legs. So long.

      Hello Philippe,

Thank you for taking the time to leave this review. We really appreciate your feedback.

First and foremost, we are truly sorry if you felt that the tour you experienced here was not value for money. This is the first time we received a review like this as many of our guests have genuinely enjoyed their time here.

However, your review has raised some crucial points which we need to work and improve on.

The team were under prepared to receive you that day as we rarely have walk-in guests who come directly to Kiulu Farmstay without making any bookings in advance. We have spoken to our Field Coordinator who is in charge there about this issue. Again, we are truly sorry and are currently rectifying the problem so that this mistake will not be repeated.

We just want to clarify with you that our Half Day Kiulu Countryside tour, which was the tour you all took part in costs MYR 175 per pax (inclusive of transport). This tour package and price is also published on our website. You can refer there for more details. Without transport service however, this tour is MYR 125 per pax, which was the amount that you paid. Since lunch was not prepared, local fruits were served to you instead.

Also, we want to share with you that Kiulu Farmstay is a community-based ecotourism product which is an integrated initiative to get the local community there involved in tourism. Visitors and guests who go there will contribute to the Community Development Fund, which is a fund that was established for the purpose of improving the economy and livelihood of the local villagers there. When guests visit and pay for the tour at Kiulu Farmstay, they are actually helping the community there by providing them with job opportunities and income. It’s one of the best ways to get them out of poverty. We also like to add that the locals there a genuine and hospitable people who loves to share their culture with others.

We really hope that you won't continue feeling cheated or suspicious after this especially towards the community there but feel rest assured that the tour you all participated in and paid for actually goes back to benefit the community of Kiulu.

Once again, thank you Philippe for this review. We truly appreciate it!

We stayed 2D/1N at the farmstay and were greeted by cute Aryl and her lovely family! We enjoyed the place and being without phone reception and just following the pace of the villagers...
Also as a Belgian the really cool riverwater was actually and finally refreshing!
We could’ve stayed easily a couple of days longer at that relaxing location!

Dear Katrien, it was a plasure having you guys. Phone reception is very limited at Kiulu, but it's just a way to focus on the green beauty that it has to offer. Thank you for planning your tour with us. Feel to free to drop your email if you want to come back in the future!

i have to admit that when i first found out there would be no mobile reception and TV i was worried on how to keep a 2 and 6 year old entertained! but i decided that i needed to breakaway from that connectivity and reconnect without these technology devices.

upon reaching the area, we crossed a suspension / hanging bridge. the kids found that amusing. then when they descended from the bridge, they ran around like wild chickens.

when we approached the fig tree i was actually impressed how compact yet complete it was. we decided to do half and half for food - cook and also enjoy the local dishes which could be ordered.

we went to the river for a dip, fed the fish in the pond, played with the local musical instruments, did a slight trek in vain to find a buffalo (don't make promises you can't keep to kids - so i learnt). we found the village buffaloes bathing in mud and owh gosh the kids were ecstatic.

at night, we had an early dinner. Helenna (who prepared our food) and Aryl (our guide) stayed on to play and chat with us and the kids. by 9pm, we called it a night.

the area is so calming and it really did give me a sense of peace.

      would i return?
      yes.

how would i vacay there again?
      with friends!

Imagine having a private space all to yourself and friends, BBQing and just enjoying the night.

Now there are only 2 rooms, but you can camps comfortable in the shaded area.

I would also have done Quad Biking but didn't have enough time for that.

      breakaway and get away.

So glad you and the kids had a wonderful time, Cassie! Taking a break from the bustling city and stepping back into the nature is worth the experience. We're so happy that the kids enjoyed watching buffaloes and playing with the suspended bridge, and we hope the food and everything else was great. Thank you for the recommendations! If you're planning to come back, we'll be ready to assist you on another adventure.

If you want to get away from it all then this is the place for you. I loved my stay at Kiulu and my host Saidin did everything possible to make me feel welcome. The food was delicious and authentic and I really enjoyed the village tour. Thank you Saidin for playing the gongs as I walked across the bridge into the farm stay :) Make sure you include this little hidden piece of paradise on your travels in Sabah.
