it took a while to discover this small jewel, a tiny restaurant hidden in a tiny square.
Rossano and his son Niccoló run this place with love and dedication. The restaurant is simple and cozy, the atmosphere is nice, like being at home. Dishes are delicious, great porcini mushrooms, bistecca, and rabbit with orange. Price are very low, considering the quality of food.
I have been there a few times, will go back for sure next time I happen to visit the area.

That day we had chosen to make a trip to Monte Amiata and enjoy the beautiful views while driving there. We ended in the tiny little village of Vivo d'Orcia where helpful inhabitants showed us the way to ristorante Il Castagno. There it was, a nice terrasse covered by a huge chestnut tree. Il Castagno. We were shown the remarkable cantina, with exclusive wines from all over the country. We had a tasty lunch, accompanied by a young vino della casa. Remakable was the chef of the whole place: a Jack Russel dog, obviously appointed by himself as the capo de tutti capi. Prices were very OK, and for the rest we let our pictures speak for themselves.

This is restaurant is part of the magic of Tuscany - excellent red wine sitting ready on the table - no written menu but a choice of what's in season or been shot by a family member - friendly service and best value anywhere in Europe .

11 of us had lunch here in June 2013. The village itself and the approach to the restaurant look unpromising but it's a gem. We ate in the courtyard under the spreading branches of the chestnut tree. The atmosphere was friendly, easy and relaxed. There was no menu and a limited choice. Everything we had was perfectly fresh, lovingly prepared, beautifully served and absolutely delicious. We'd booked it on the basis of TripAdvisor reviews and were not disappointed. It's the sort of friendly family-run restaurant that deservedly gives Italian food a good name.
