Since Maria died the restaurant has more compromises. The many endorsements may be part of the reason why the quality of food is diminishing. Pasta was over cooked and overpriced. Did not have any attention from the waiter and despite repeated requests for the bill had to wait 45 minutes.

With a few friends we visited this restaurant today. What a lovely suprise!! It was suggested by a friend but we did not expect it to be this good. Excellent service and fine wine and starters followed by wonderful pasta dishes (the pasta is home made) and then some meat from the grill. Coffee was servced with several different "digestive" drinks offered on the house. And all this cost just 22 Euro per person. Excellent!!.

if you like home made pasta, this restaurant is for you. Best angel hair pasta, known locally as maccheroncini, apparently is by a woman who lives in Poggio Moiano and everyone in the 20 km radius orders pasta from her. I also recommend another pasta dish: ravioli. They are stuffed with the ricotta filling, spiced with local majoram and you can taste the creaminess of the sheep ricotta. And, if you are not afraid to try offal, incredible the coratella d'agnello: chopped offal, cooked with the local olive oil, plenty of spices and some hot peppers.

The pastas ares served with the local sauces. Please try the tomato sauce on maccheroncini. It is to die for. And use the local bread to wipe the juices of coratella. I'm less enthusiastic about their secondi piati: the meat is of very good quality but the dishes are a bit stodgy, something aunt Gina would cook for dinner and I tend to want something more when I go to the restraurant.

The Maria Fontana is open for lunches only but it is also open on Sunday. However, bear in mind that you must reserve a table for Sunday lunch. Often they are packed on Sunday.

I am in Italy for vacation (from NYC) and am currently at the Fara Music Festival (Fara Sabina). At night, I listen to free live outdoor jazz concerts and during the day venture out by bike to ride through the rolling countryside. Yesterday I found myself in the town of Poggio Moiano, and hungry.
Maria Fontana restaurant topped off an already good day. This family run restaurant caters to the local community as well as Romans on holiday. I enjoyed fresh basil fettuccine and beef scalopini along with lots of bread and sautéed spinach. The food was amazing and fresh and the family seemed to derive joy by welcoming and feeding me. After a two hour nap in a nearby park, I climbed the hills back to Fara Sabina to hear the jazz stylings of Greg Hutchinson, Ruben Rogers, and Jonathan Kreisberg. Tonight, a solo concert by the amazing Kevin Hays.
