We stayed at Villa Sunbird between Christmas and New Year 2016 with friends who were visiting us from Dubai. The Villa is ideally located with the beach at the end of the large garden. The rooms are clean and modern and the pool was ideal for the three young children and a walk along the beach was perfect pre dinner exercise.
The staff are very friendly and attentive and always willing to help. The live in chef was very good and always catered for our needs, our children 'don't like spicy' and he made all the meals to perfection. You can also travel to nearby attractions quite easily and Sanjeeva can arrange all this for you. We are returning in March with other members of my family in March and will no doubt have a great time again.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good but the upstairs rooms have a good sea view.

A beautifully furnished small (6 room) hotel in a quiet location, with large, well-equipped bedroom and bathroom and high quality air-conditioning, and plenty of places to sit and socialise on the ground floors. Very attentive and helpful staff, providing good food (fish curry recommended) and flexible menu. Small pool adequate for cooling off. Direct access to the sandy beach between two small fishing villages, but not safe to swim in the sea. We would certainly go again if in the area.

The accommodation itself deserves a higher rating than 2, but my overall rating takes the price tag into account. We stayed here at the end of a two-week-plus stay, for a 'big last night' but, at $100 (twice what we paid for any other accommodation in SL) we failed to see or feel the special-ness of this place. The house is in a potentially beautiful natural setting but the beach at the end of the garden, which could be great, is filthy with rubbish (complete with the depressing sight of turtles murdered for their meat, and their desecrated nests), and the birdlife is essentially thousands of loud crows squawking overhead like a bad omen. The main garden has a scrubby feel, with power lines across it (you leave the lagoon behind and pass all the nice plants on the drive on the way in) and a metal wire fence at the end. On our arrival the property felt 'forgotten', in the way the best places don't, even when empty (although credit to the cheerful and energetic Sri Lankan gentleman who met and greeted us for the efforts he made). Breakfast was reasonable, dinner curry was OK, but the calamari and chips were at best mediocre. To be fair, they did send out for beer and only charged it at shop price. On the plus side a/c, showers, toilets, mosquito nets etc all work, the house was clean and the bedroom had a very nice rustic style, comfortable 4-poster bed, and breezy balcony (although the views of dilapidated neighbouring buildings are not the best). The rest of the property has been nicely done out, but just lacks ambience for some reason, as does the outdoor eating area where all meals are taken. The pool is tiny and looks like it needs more filtration (and pool towels smell of petrol). Overall I expected something much more special for the price and would not go back to Villa Sunbird at the prices they charge.

Sanjeeva G, Managing Agent at Villa Sunbird, responded to this reviewResponded 2 March 2017

Thank you very much for your review and we sincerely regret that you did not enjoy your stay at Villa Sunbird.

We are sorry you were unhappy about the price but you were staying over the Xmas New Year period, which is the most expensive hotel period anywhere.

Villa Sunbird offers an unspoilt, unique Sri Lankan experience in a non commercial beach and generally of our reviews at either "excellent" or "very good" but we of course are not satisfied that you did not have the experience we would have wanted to provide.

We are situated on a working beach and seasonally the tide does bring in litter from the sea, although this is cleaned from time to time. At the time the fishing nets are brought in, it is also common for crows to gather in the area. We are sorry you did not witness the many migrant birds in the area. Our bird watching area above the gatehouse overlooks the Gin Oya and is famed for sightings of many rare migrants.

Sri Lanka has had unusual reports of dead turtles being washed up on its western coast during the last month. There are however (to our knowledge), no turtle nests in the vicinity of the villa. Turtles are a protected species in Sri Lanka and harming them or their nests carry heavy criminal sanctions. We have instructed the staff at the villa to be vigilant for any human involvement in these turtle deaths.

Thank you also for your kind comments about the villa. With the drought experienced in Sri Lanka it has been difficult to maintain the green. Due to the strength of monsoon winds, we have also found it difficult to maintain foliage close to the beach but this is usually a lush lawn which adds to the serenity of the setting. We have shared your comments about the villa and the food with the staff towards improving the service

Working in colombo as an expat, this was the perfect getaway right by the beach while not having to travel too far out of the city.
The staff was very helpful and the food was excellent.
Will definitely come again!
