We spent 12 nights at the Luna Azul and enjoyed every moment. After an horrendous transfer from our previous location we were relieved to at last arrive at this superb hotel. Rolf, the owner greeted us and made us feel most welcome. We were allocated "Pacifico" Cabinda, a large individual bungalow with plenty of space and natural light. The en-suite shower room was open to the outside. It was strange to have a shower with the odd Howler Monkey looking on but it was fine as it was completely private with only them and the forest canopy as far as the eye could see. This led around to a large balcony with rocking chairs to sit and enjoy the views and watch the wildlife from the comfort of your room. Inside Air Con was provided as well as fans so it was comfortable for sleeping as well.

Breakfast was included in the rate and consisted of fresh fruit with yoghurt and granola, home made bread and jam, eggs to order with bacon and Gallo Pinto. Fruit juice and plenty of good Costa Rican coffee was always available. Evening meals were extra and each course individually priced. There was a good choice of salads, pasta, fish, beef, and chicken on offer. Each main had a choice of rice, fries (potato or Yucca or house potatoes (recommended). The standard of food has been the best so far whilst travelling in CR, over 5 weeks now. The hotel did not open for lunch but who needed lunch after such great dinners and breakfasts.

An excellent infinity pool is available for cooling off from the heat of the day, again with glorious views and surrounded by pleasant gardens which border a forest reserve so full of birds, butterflies, iguanas, monkeys, agouti and cute coatis.

Our main aim of spending so long in the area was to see the turtle "Arribada", the mass laying of eggs by the female Olive Ridley marine turtle. When this occurs, the beach is closed to the Public and a local guide is required to enter the prohibited area. We were fortunate not only to see numerous females struggling up the beach to prepare a nest, lay her eggs, and long haul back to the sea, but also to catch sight of two hatchlings from a previous laying make their long journey to the sea - hope they made it to return and lay their own future generation.

We were also lucky that this Arribada was at the north end of the beach as the hotel is about a 1km hike down hill to the nearest beach access but of course it's all up hill on the return.

One morning before breakfast Rolf informed us that the Arribada was happening now and that thousands were coming ashore and he kindly dropped everything and drove us down. Absolutely fantastic to see all those turtles going back and forth to lay their eggs. That same morning Rolf had organised an ocean boat tour to see the turtles in the open seas and again he dropped us at the next village to meet a couple of locals with their small boat. We were lucky to see close up so many more turtles and we even spotted a female Humpback whale and calf.

Most people using the hotel had there own 4WD, the only car to have during the rainy season and even with this some of the rivers are difficult to cross as we found out on our transfer here. If you are using rental car it is strongly recommended that you read the directions and warnings on Luna Azul's web site they are very clear.

Rolf is an attentive host and will help you if it is within his powers to do so. Just a few days before checkout Rolf spoke to our transfer company on our behalf to ensure that they had our booking and that the driver knew to take the Northern route to the hotel. Rolf informed us that the driver was going to take the Southern route which was impassible by a non 4WD and sometimes impossible to cross with any vehicle. In short our original booking was cancelled by the transfer company and we used Rolf's recommended driver to take us on to our next destination of course via the north.

This accommodation has undoubtedly been the best we have experienced in CR and we have no hesitation in recommended Rolf, Andreas and their little heaven called Luna Azul on the Guanacaste peninsula - a big thank you from us both ... ...

Room Tip: We had the Pacifico cabin with a sea view and glorious sunsets

When I have a day dream in a cold winterday, I always imagine our beautiful moments in Luna Azul. We've been there several times. It's a quiet, relaxing and warm atmosphere and we feel always welcome, like arriving at the house of old friends. The hosts are open minded, warm and friendly and we enjoy their sense of humor. All the employees are very friendly.
Luna Azul is situated on a hill, overviewing the Pacific Ocean. The sunsets there are unique and romantic and with a cold Piña Colada or a beer, you won't forget this moments and the multitude of nuances of colors until the night is falling.
Breakfast and dinner at the restaurant are exquisite and I never miss the desserts.
The beaches near the hotel are are traditional "tico-beaches" - most of them are fisher villages and maintain their own costumes.
We could enjoy an "arribada" this July and were so happy and grateful for this unique and unforgettable nature spectacle. Thank you, Rolf and Andreas for these beautiful days in Luna Azul! Hope to see you soon again!

My family and I stayed at Luna Azul on ur first trip to Costa Rica in 2005. In 2011 we actually rented a house nearby with another family and missed Luna Azul tremendously. So we were thrilled to be back las month, 12 years after our first visit. We were astonished by how little it has changed. This is particularly impressive when you realize the impact humidity and saltwater air can have! I am astounded by the foresight the owners had back in 2002/2003 to build a place that remains perfect and absolute heaven to this day. They maintain it impeccably and oversee every detail. We were treated like family during our stay, as were all guests we observed, be they staying at Luna Azul, or simply enjoying the spectacular dinners there. I hope we didn't offend our hosts, Rolf and Andreas, when we were perfectly happy to spend our days at the pool, on our balcony, in the lounge enjoying a perfect margarita while playing board games, etc. We will definitely return to Luna Azul to enjoy the perfection and hospitality of Rolf and Andreas.

Room Tip: Oh my goodness, not a bad room in the place! We had howler monkeys over our balcony!
