Luke was recommended to us as the best boat/snorkeling/reef fishing guide on the island. We had a great day out along the east Atlantic coast, in beautiful snorkel and fishing spots among reef fish, turtles, rays, barracuda, and sharks, all tailored to our requirements. Would recommend highly -
My brothers and I recently did a trip to Deadmans Cay for a free diving/spearfishing trip. Luke Maillis was referred to us by several other experienced divers. All of us have different levels of experience from, no experience, to some. Luke Maillis and his team are able to take a tricky activity and make it a success for all levels. Each one of us where able to be successful spearfishing and ended up pushing ourselves with the help of the patience and expertise of Luke. Safety is highest priority for Luke and his team and at all times we were trained in the proper way to do everything. I can't wait to bring the rest of my family including young children to learn from Luke, he is a master in his craft and very passionate about sharing it with anyone who is willing to learn. A truly unique and special combination, one that no one should miss no matter what skill, comfort level in the water.
My wife and I just spent 10 days in Clarencetown. Luke came recommended from the girls at Harbor Breeze Villas ( the place to stay). We met Luke and Jess on a Monday morning and followed them with boat in tow to Fords where we launched. Just a short boat ride and we were in the Majestic waters of Long Island. Working different coral heads and patch reefs we were able to spear hogfish, mutton snapper and crawfish. My wife was able to enjoy all the tropical fish and wildlife that inhabit these areas while snorkeling with us. Jess’s boat handling and ability to work with spears and handling of fish was awesome. She was always aware of where we were in the water. We felt super safe. Luke is a phenomenal free diver and very attentive to what’s happening at all times. Also just a super nice guy and very dialed into the area and it’s waters. After a full day on the water, the boat was loaded back on the trailer and we followed them to Clarencetown for fish cleaning at the govt dock. We all enjoyed a beer while watching the tarpon and sharks clean up the scraps. What a day it was!
Luke and Jess runs a world class charter service and are all around great people to be with. The fishing, diving and all the moments in between made it an unforgettable trip.
We are a group of 5 guys who have just started spearfishing and dedicated a full 5 day spearfishing trip with Luke and Jess. Luke spent the first couple hours teaching the basics of freediving, safety and how to handle our gear.
The trip exceeded all of our expectations. We highly recommend chartering with Luke and Jess.
Fishing and Diving
Luke is a world class free diver and spearfishermen. All fishing days are thoughtfully planned according weather conditions. It seems as though he has endless amount of spots and selectively picks each one based on weather conditions, diver experience and targeted species. Not only did Luke put us on great fish, he is highly focused on safety and everyone’s wellbeing. During our trip, we were able to get fish that we would have never imagined to. Our group, which all consisted of beginner spearfishermen, caught quality grouper, permit, hogfish and snapper. At the end of the day, Luke and Jess bring all the fish back to the Clarence town dock and fillet the catch for your dinner.
Boating
The Speartime is a 27ft boat which is ideal for the waters in Long Island. It did not feel cluttered at all with the 5 of us, all our gear and Luke and Jess. Jess is a great boater, keeps an eye on everyone’s location while we were in the water and is a pro at handling all the equipment and fish. She makes entering / exiting the boat and secures our catch seemless.
Long Island
We made the trip specifically for spearfishing and found Long Island to be a great out island experience (small grocery stores and few restaurants) with very friendly people. The remoteness and limited access also means there are very few boater / fishing charters around and therefore plenty of locations exclusively for us.
Our family went on a full day deep sea fishing trip with Luke. He has quite a good reputation on the island for spear fishing too, but we weren't that brave. He was born and raised on the island and is very knowledgable! We departed at 9am from the Clarence Town government dock and headed about 6-9 miles out to Simms Bar for the day. The lines started tripping in no time! One after another we took turns reeling in the fish. We are 5 total, with twin 15 y/o girls and an 11 y/o son, so the boat was full, but we managed. We caught black fin tuna and black snapper, but we also saw a couple of sharks as they thought about making a meal of our catch! No kidding, these fish fought like a marlin. Luke worked hard running back and forth helping the kids with the rods, keeping lines from becoming tangled and getting new bait on and back in the water. It was an exciting and exhausting day. Make sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen, along with snacks or a lunch. At the end of the day, Luke quickly and skillfully cleaned our 10 fish; allowing the kids to throw the scraps into the water to watch the sharks, sea-turtles, and tarpon feast. It was a fantastic day and will be a lasting memory for our family!
I charter boats often and I can say that Luke & Steve really know their stuff and take very good care of their guest! Luke put us on some real nice hog fish and grouper while snorkeling. He also gave us some techniques to use for free-diving deeper and staying longer in order to get the big fish! He holds some of the worlds deepest freediving records, set right here in Deans blue hole on Long Island, Bahamas. We shot fish most of the morning and then trolled the rest of the afternoon for Tuna & Wahoo. Full day charter, great time! Highly recommend booking with Luke if you have the chance to get to Long Island Bahamas, you wont be disappointed!
