Parked up at pukerua bay trainstation and caught the train to paekakariki. From paekakariki station walked south along the motorway until we got to a bridge going over train tracks which you go under to cross the motorway and start the walk . Starts off easy and steadily progresses to the steap climb which is magnificent. Recommend this route

Started at Paekakariki end at 9am. Had no problem parking and the start of the track is well signposted from the main village centre (there are public toilets and a map). The steps were challenging but the views amazing. Would not recommend going on a very windy day as the track is one person wide with a big drop to the side and there are no handrails. The 2 swing bridges are excellent and again offer great views. At the end of the track you end up at Pukerua station and can get the train back. Unfortunately they were not running when we went but there was a replacement bus. Not signposted where you had to get the bus from or that the trains weren't running. We got the information off the internet from our phone. All in all a fabulous day ending with a lovely lunch in Paekakariki.

Would not take young children on this.
Awesome views. A great challenge. We found it hard to find the end of the tracks and where to park and begin. We walked half way and turned around as it was getting dark. Definitely want to do the full track the next time we are down.

Great to do, had a great time, possibly went a bit quick because hubby moved us along to keep up with him, but beautiful views & great to said we have done it. 2.5 hours in total, North to South direction. Start earlier, we did it on a really hot day, starting at 10:30am, & take more than one bottle of water each. Kids are 14yo & 12yo & a fit family

What an awesome reward for a challenging walk from Pukerua Bay. Walking in from the the Southern end is definitely more challenging than the Paekakariki entrance with most of the steps running in an up hill direction. We had a perfect day with expansive views over a clear blue sea with fantastic clear air so the South Island was clearly in view.
Definitely not the fittest person but enjoyed the challenge.
Enjoyed the refreshments at the end of the line while waiting for a train back.
