We stopped here for a breakfast of coffee and toast one weekday morning. While toast wasn’t on the menu, and at first we were told they couldn’t do just toast, in the end it was possible. The coffee was good, and there was some great looking baking in the cabinets - things like the cheese scone and caramel slice were large and looked very tempting. This cafe is clearly popular with the locals; groups of them were catching up with one another here.
Toilet at the rear, car parking on the street outside and the cafe is in the midst of a selection of local shops for you to stock up on essentials or grab a gift or two while you are in town. We especially love Taonga o te Ao, right across the street, with its selection of bespoke local product and Māori crafts. Ka mau te wehi!

This is a favourite of locals and travellers alike and has been a ‘must stop’ cafe for us each time we travel north.
Menu and cabinet offer all the usual fare- but with a twist of sophisticated flavour and flair that makes everything totally tempting.
On our most recent trip, we rang ahead and asked them to save us a corn fritter as we know they sell out fast!
From the welcoming rainbow flag to the warmth and efficiency of the owners, this cafe is a total gem.
Eat heaps then stroll across the road to the amazing new Hunderwasser Memorial Park- both reflect a community pride and creative muscle that makes Kawakawa unique and utterly fabulous.
BTW- coffee’s great too!

Great spot for delicious food, try the date scone! Right opposite the famous hundertwasser toilets. Tops.

Came up to Kawakawa with a friend, one daughter for my birthday lunch with my daughter who works at the local hospital
Arrived just before 1pm, friend, working daughter and I ordered out of the cabinet while other daughter stayed outside with her dog
When she went it was a couple of minutes before 1,but assistant was making coffee, so it was 3 mins after 1 when she tried to order off the menu, only to be told the kitchen was closed, and she would have to get something out of cabinet, there was little left and nothing she wanted
Felt very disappointed and it put dampener on our day
The coffee was watery and my pani was not heated right through
Staff attitude was to just shrug their shoulders
We hear all the time of how places are struggling, with this attitude this place does not deceive to survive

A great place to stop for coffee on the Twin Coast Northland cycle trip, unfortunately we didn’t get to experience the wonderful food we had been told about as we got there at 12.45pm and the kitchen shuts at 1pm. A shame as they lost out on a lot of business for a Saturday lunchtime in the school holidays - maybe next time
