Just wanted to say thankyou to Sue and the staff at The Malt Shovel for my father's birthday dinner, after having his treat of driving a steam train just down the road at Ecclesbourne railway ( who are also lovely people who really looked after and gave him the ultimate in steam train driving experience ) and as it was his 75th birthday we booked a rather nice restaurant but as it over-ran the said restaurant was not at all helpful in rearranging a later time, in steps Sue at The Malt Shovel who easily accommodated our party of 10 at an hours notice and also bought his birthday cake out whilst singing "happy birthday". Thankyou so much to you all for rounding off my dad's birthday with 10 lovely roast dinners. We look forward to visiting again on our next visit to Wirksworth.

I totally agree with the last few contributers. This is a great pub serving good food and an excellent pint of pedigree. Perhaps the earlier visitors just didn't understand Derbyshire humour! Well worth a visit.

I have called in at this pub whilst out walking and have always received a warm welcome. Their Sunday lunch is excellent value, with three sizes on offer. The Pedigree bitter is superb!

If you are after fine dining with a large choice, this isn't the pub for you, but if like your pubs simple and rural, it certainly is.

Not sure what pub previous reviewers had been in but we were given a warm, friendly welcome in this cosy "proper" country pub. The place was warm, with log fires burning in the bar and dining area. We were passing and hungry so popped in for a Sunday roast. We both had a medium roast and the quality was very good - great value at £6:95 each as well. The puddings were even better, and home made onsite too.
Would recommend and will definitely visit again next time we are passing.

Not sure where the recent reviewers have been! The Malt shovel is a proper pub with real food, no pretentious city style overpriced rubbish just honest, simple food cooked well with good portions and good prices. X2, yes 2! real fires burning, lovely log fire in the bar and log burner in the 'dining' area.
If you want fancy then go pay fancy prices and eat in a fancy environment, this is a pub as pubs should be.
Dogs and all welcome.
