“Christmas at Eillotts”
Review of Elliott's Shop

Elliott's Shop
Reviewed 24 January 2013

It was the big event in Saltash, the turning on of the christmas lights. Lots of fun in Fore Street with stalls, childrens lantern parade and all the shops open. I went into Eillotts store and was welcomed with a mulled wine and biscuit. The helpers were very friendly, new a lot about the back ground knowledge and history of the shop. It was a real pleasure to visit such a well preserved treasure. Lots of memorabilia and everyone that visited found this shop fascinating. Both Eillotts store and Mary Newmans Cottage are run by the Tamar Potection Society and need visiters to keep these gems going. Its also an Ideal viewing platform for the furture Celtic Cross.

An opportunity to look at how a small local shop ran into the buffers in the 1970s. An increase in rates and the inevitability of decimalisation proved too much for the aging owner who did not want change and who had no one to succeed or enervate him. Supermarkets and modern products and attitudes did not appeal. A very interesting frozen moment.

The memories came flooding back every where I looked. The shop is exactly how it was when it closed so even the 1970's packaging bought back great memories. You can see how time progressed in the shop through things like the old gaslights, the grocery delivery bike, the coffee grinder and the old Babycham glasses !! It is a real trip back in time. There are so many personal things lying about too. Look out for Mr Elliotts old hat in the shop and his glasses in the parlour which has been brought to life too.

Well worth a visit - it's actually open on Saturday and Wednesday now and not "by appointment".
