It was AWESOME! For the lazy, beach relaxing, sun loving crowd. Great Diving too! Mantas and a whale shark. Had a great time! PERFECT FOR COUPLES!!

Pros Cons
The Room Room Service Menu got a little old
The Beach Wine Prices were high
The Diving
The Snorkeling
The Staff
Everything else

To the details:
First, we are lazy travelers. With the exception of scuba diving, I like to do as little as possible on vacation. Give me beach, sun, ocean, room service and cocktails.

With that said, Baros Resort has about the most ideal set-up I can imagine. Your own beach, great room, hands off staff and a very close reef to snorkel whenever you get inspired.

The airport is really easy. Its customs to baggage claim to x-ray to boat. They will confiscate ALL alcohol that they find in your bags, even the duty free. But the x-ray guys didn’t seem that interested in actually x-raying anything, so you could probably get it past them. You walk out of the airport and are greeted by the Baros reps. You walk another 100 yards to the boat for a 20 minute boat ride to the island. Easy.

The Room: We stayed in a Deluxe Villa that was perfect. They offer rooms on the water called Water Villas and I almost upgraded to these rooms and could not be happier that I did NOT. These rooms are a longer walk from the restaurants and also do NOT have easy access to beach.
The Deluxe Villas: It was about 15 feet from our back door to the beach/water. We had 2 assigned and marked beach chairs with an umbrella. The villa could not be easily seen from the beach and was pretty secluded from foot traffic. (We stayed in 115. For some reason it had an extra set of beach chairs as well as a hammock, also a little more separation from the rest of the villas. We felt we lucked out. The only downside was part of our view was blocked by the water villas. Didn’t bother us though, we still had a good view.)
The villa itself was well taken care of and clean. It’s pretty much exactly as you seen on the website. Outdoor bathroom with a normal and garden shower. We loved the set-up. It also had a nice deck area on the back with chairs and a couch. Great for eating room service or having a cocktail in the evenings.
The staff is invisible. You come back from breakfast and your room is made. Its amazing. Everything gets done without you ever seeing anything.

The Food: The restaurants were good. The morning breakfast buffet is included and is pretty expansive. Lots of options, including fruit, omelet and waffle stations. The Lighthouse was our favorite. It sits over the water and they had a blues band playing one of the nights that was amazing. We ate dinner and then went upstairs to the bar. It was really nice. The wine is pricey even for an island. So I suggest sneaking some in if you can. The airport didn’t scan that hard. It seemed like it was a formality. Anyway, the room service menu was good but got a little old after a week.

The Diving: The diving was great. The dive boat is very spacious. The most room Ive ever had on a dive boat. The dive masters are very relaxed and hands off. They always took out enough dive masters to have really small groups, no more than 5. We were the only dive pair one day. Our dive spots were no more than 45 minutes away. The water was great. Really warm. I wore a shorty wetsuit. About 70-80 ft vis most days. Drift dives mostly. Not to fast. We only had to work a little on one dive.
The reefs had a TON of life. School upon school of fish. Giant Mantas swam by on 2 out of 3 dives. We got really lucky and saw a whale shark. Octopus, turtles, black-tip reef sharks everywhere.
There is a house reef for you to dive or snorkel as you please right off the island. It’s pretty nice to go out and swim a lap of the island whenever you want.

It was just what we needed. We had lots of privacy and lots of relaxation. We will definitely return.

Baros is an absolute Gem. Myself and my husband went there on our Honeymoon in September and couldn't have asked for a nicer stay. Everything about it was fantastic: The rooms, food, friendly staff, beach. All the restaurants are good. The lighthouse was the best but we also really enjoyed the Maldivian night buffet which they have once a week. The weather was also good when we went: last two weeks in September. We had rain for one or two days, but only for a few hours each time. A wonderful and totally relaxing place.

We spend 10 days on Baros - it was our first time to The Maldives and I have to say it was one of the most relaxing holidays I have ever been on and I would definitely go back. The transfer from Male is only 20 minutes by speedboat and you feel chilled out the minute you arrive.
We stayed in a Deluxe beach villa - which was great and had everything you could need, including a funky outdoor bathroom.
The service and the food are absolutely fantastic - we ate in all 3 restaurants and the food was delicious, especially the seafood and the curries. The snorkelling on the house reef was amazing - so many fish as well as turtles, reef sharks and rays.
It was my birthday whilst we were there and they arranged for champagne breakfast on the beach and a cake at dinner.
The only downsides are that 1) food and especially alcohol is expensive, as it all has to be imported 2) we went on a couple of excursions and weren't that impressed. For example on the dolphin sunset trip the staff knew very little about the dolphins

We have just returned from 7 amazing nights at Baros. There is not much to add to the accolade of reviews below, but as regular TA readers know, TA never lies! Like other reviewers I find it difficult to know where to start.

We stayed 3 nights in a water villa nd 4 nights in a beach villa. The water villa provided a spectacular setting for watching sunsets surrounded by glimmering turquoise waters - if you want total privacy, you may wish to select this option. It is accommodation in the 'once-in-a-lifetime' bracket with ipod docker, huge four poster bed, large bathroom looking out on to the Indian Ocean, private decking. We actually preferred the beach villa as it is lovely to have your own spot on the beach - the villa was slightly smaller, but still very luxurious and the bathroom was a wonderful outdoor/indoor place. In terms of privacy, you are fairly close to other couples so just have to hope they are friendly! (incidentally we had a couple who appeared to think that our villa sunloungers belonged to them - strange, but most people on Baros are not like this!) The downside of having a water villa is that you don't have any good sunloungers on the beach.

Something that isn't really emphasised about Baros, is the food. We went on a half-board option and tried the Lighthouse degustation menu and Cayenne Grill for the Maldivian night. What is most surprising is the culinary excellence brought to Baros by the executive head chef Damian Barrett. In most hotel resorts the main half-board choice restaurant is a buffet type affair. The Lime restaurant in Baros is really exceptional - a superb choice of food.

We went on several excursions and I recommend all of them! The Male sightseeing trip provided a good contrast to resort life as does the island hopping trip - included is a trip to Banyan Tree resort where you can compare the strengths and weaknesses of both resorts! Baros, of course, comes up top. The Dolphin cruise was particularly enjoyable as the dolphins really put on a show for us - sipping champagne, watching dolphins against the backdrop of a setting sun is a heartwarming experience. The fact that people from another boat were taking pictures of us probably tells its own story! The sea plane trip is awesome too and provides a better perspective than the airplane flight in and out of Male and a great chance to take some good photos.

The most magical thing you can do is to go on the Sandbank BBQ. It's expensive but totally worth it. You are transported to a strip of sugary white sand in the middle of the Indian Ocean surrounded by small crabs and turquoise waters, where a chef and waiter await. A spectacular sunset awaits together with a delicious menu - ours included lobster and beef fillet.

The staff are what really makes Baros so good - friendly and helpful beyond the call of duty. We found Leen and Christie to be particularly helpful - nothing was too much trouble for them. The restaurant staff were all great too. All in all this was a holiday of a lifetime - the pinnacle of my worldly travels so far. I have simply not experienced anything better than Baros, Maldives.
