This is the type of establishment that gives Kinsale a great name. You can taste the commitment to making each dish coherent and distinctive. The Lamb Kofta was a brilliant mix of Arab and European and the Monkfish is a taste of the Ocean. Few kitchens can deliver two dishes side by side like that.

And busy on a rainy Sunday night.. with a mixture of locals and tourists.
Another family run classic in a town that has some of the best restaurants in Ireland.

Visited Max’s this visit. Lovely restaurant on the higher end of the cuisine offerings in Kinsale. Hosts were very welcoming and place is very warm and cosy.
Good menu choice and ideal for a special night out. Food was superb and wine list had a great selection. Again will be back

While we were made feel welcome by the host we ended up a bit disappointed by the food. Finding out that the Early Bird offer doesn’t apply to any of the desserts was a shame so I ordered just the venison. The dish I was served was charred black on one side and then hidden which resulted in over cooked meat of 2 out of 3 pieces (the other was thicker so even though blackened it was still pink inside). The waiter barely slowed down when asking how was the food so as I was chewing I had no opportunity to let them know about the dish. Turnips still basically crunchy so I ended up leaving half the dish. Still no mention by our waiter so I just paid and left without comment. In the end not worth going to when you have very good restaurants like Fishy Fishy just seconds away.

We chose Max’s Bistro and Seafood for our evening meal. This restaurant was opened in 1999. Owners Anne Marie and Olivier Queva (who is also the chef), specialize in seafood dishes but the menu also includes pheasant, pork belly, lamb and beef… The bright red exterior draws you in and the tables are widely separated in the dining area. We were among the first guests to arrive once they opened for dinner.

To begin with, our server brought us some lovely whole grain brown bread with an olive tapenade as a spread. Not everyone was hungry after an earlier fairly heavy lunch so some of us went 'light' for dinner. One choice was the Sauté Irish Squid with chorizo, thyme, leeks and mixed rice timbale. (8.50E/$10.20 US) It was very nice and well plated too!

Another luscious item selected were an appealing plate of Grilled mussels with garlic butter, parsley and breadcrumbs. (8.50E/$10.20 US) We also ordered some steamed mussels in a butter sauce that were very good… One entree was the was the Pan Fried Ling with pancetta, puy lentils, flat parsley, baby onions and roasted carrot. (22.90E/$27.50 US) It was excellent.

Entrees were accompanied by the only boiled potatoes that we had in Ireland. They were very nice locally grown Piccolo Star Potatoes. Attractive and flavorful salads were selected as sides by 2 of us. They were very different than the ‘usual’ salad, with lots of different textures. (5.00E/$6.00 US) An eye catching bowl of red cabbage was another option as a side with our meals. (4.00/$4.80 US) It was very nice indeed…

For my entrée I had the Grilled Whole Black Sole with herb butter... (30.00E/$36.00 US) It was light, delicate and flavorful…just excellent!

We ended up sharing a couple of desserts. One excellent and attractive after dinner sweet treat consisted of vanilla ice cream, fresh cream, chocolate sauce, toasted almonds, crushed amoretti and meringue. (7.00E/$8.40 US) The second one was Short Bread Crust Pastry with vanilla ice cream, crème legere, (a light cream), fresh local strawberries and a blackcurrant drizzle. (8.50E/$10.20 US) It was a nice refreshing treat but we really would have preferred that ‘drizzle’ be over the top of this creation. Still, it was a fine finish to an excellent meal!

Visited with relatives for dinner and was highly impressed with the menu and quality of the food. The service was warm and welcoming and we left full and contented. We will be back!
