Ugo Bay is located in Kalkudah (Western Coast of Sri Lanka, accross the island from the airport, approx. 7 hours by car from Colombo). Beauriful green area with a pool, own ocean beach, grill place, spa, and restaurant. Not crowded. At the time of our stay there were 2 Russian-speaking families, a dozen of Arabs, a dozen of French people, three of four Brits and several local tourists.Hotel is located im about 5 miles from the closest town (tuk-tuk to the town is about $4). No restaurants, shops or any places to visit within walking distance.

Staff
Well-wishing, well-disposed, helpful, kind. Although English of the hotel people is rather weak, they apply necessary efforts to understand guests. By European standards, the service is a bit slow, but that does not cause any significant issues - just allow at least one hour for anything you ask for (and be prepared that it might be done tomorrow).

Rooms
Very spacious, super clean, comfortable. Equipped with A/C of sufficient power, fridge, mini-bar and cable TV with DVD-player. No insects of any kind. Small porch with two beach chairs. Big bathroom with wall mirror, two sinks and designer shower equipment.

Area
Green lawns, many palm trees, asphalt and sand paths, and many functional and decorative lights.

Beach and ocean
Clean wide sand beach equipped with recliners and shades. Sufficient supply of clean beach towels. Served with beach bar (paid). Warm ocean - I would even say, hot ocean! Water is clean and lake-like calm. There is a scooter rental (paid). Ugo Bay hotel beach is not delimited from beaches of adjacent hotels, but that does not create any hassle or issues. Overall, the beaches are almost empty. In about a mile from Ugo Bay there is a public beach, but its visitors never enter hotel beaches.

Food
Choice of buffet or menu in breakfasts and dinners. Pricing is rather high, it's comparable to that in Europe. Food is European and Lankian. It is good, but tastes different from what you might expect. Moussaka is not moussaka, pasta is not pasta, chicken tikka masala is not chicken tikka masala and pizza, of course, is not pizza in our understanding of that food. Again, everything is good and tasty, but you will not be able to find proper Indian or European food in hotel. Supply of Lankian fruits is abundant. Apart from main restaurant there is beach bar with grill. By request, the food might be served on the beach or on your porch.

Amenties
The pool is shallow. Water is very clean. Might be heated by the sun to 40 degrees Celsium or even higher. There are recliners and 4 showers with fresh water. Good supply of clean towels.

Internet
Free Wi-Fi. Unstable and weak. Most probably, you will be able to read your emails, but skyping will be almost impossible.

Entertainment
You entertain yourself. TV and several books forgotten by the guests are only types of entertainment provided by hotel.

Shopping
No shopping available in hotel. Adjacent hotel has a small shop with jewels, souvenirs and swimming stuff. If you need to do shopping, your only option is to go to the town by bicycle provided by the hotel for free or by tuk-tuk.

Security
The areas is walled. There are guards at the entrance gate and on the beach. The gate is always closed.

We’ve stayed for 8 nights at the wonderful Uga Bay Resort and enjoyed every minute.

Once arrived in Colombo, the driver from our private transfer (hotel’s own)
was already waiting for us. During the 6h drive (where water was provided for us) with a fantastic & safe driver we’ve arrived after 9pm at our destination. We’re kindly welcome with a refreshing drink while the check-in was done and then guided to our fantastic room (ocean studio) with the best view and balcony (Room #47) facing the ocean & beach - beeing actually only footsteps away.
We’d like to also thank the cleaning staff who have provided us with very clean and tidy rooms (they were made 2 a day).

The breakfast buffet was amazing, there was a broad variety in bread, sweet delights, cakes, delicious fresh fruits & juices, egg dishes, to choose from waffles, bacon & beans and also a huge option from local breakfast dishes.
(We’ve pre-booked breakfast)

A couple of times we’ve ordered small dishes for a late lunch at the beach bar which were freshly prepared in the main kitchen and brought down to the beach.
The guys at the beachbar always welcomed us with a friendly smile and wanted us to be happy & fully enjoy our time - special thanks here goes to Sajee who always made sure we received the drinks the way we’d like them and he even got us an extra coconut from the tree. ☺

The Dinners were always absolute highlights. If there are more guests a big buffet (so wonderfully prepared) is ready to choose from and makes it really difficult not wanting to taste everything (we’ve tried to taste as many dishes as possible).
If there are fewer guests there’s always the à-la carte menu or sometimes a set menu (4 course with 2 choices for each course) available.
Chef Rohan and his team did a wonderful job and frequently checked if we’re satisfied and fully enjoying the meals. We would also like to mention the excellent and courteous service in the restaurant.

Activities are offered but we’re mostly interested in relaxing on the beach (sun beds on the beach were daily equipped with fresh towels and we’ve quickly found our preferred spot (under a big palm tree) on the left side of the beach bar.
The beach was wonderful (gets cleaned from sea grass every day) – we didn’t use the pool as we’ve preferred the ocean – but used the showers next to the pool after our swims in the ocean.

Uga Bay also offers a variety of signature dinners (e.g. Dinner on the beach).
Since my boyfriend turned 30 I’ve chosen the sand-Table dinner option, (table and chairs are literally dug in Sand and dinner is served in that very special set-up under the moon light and surrounded by flambeaus (it sounds incredible and definitely looked & felt incredibly). The Sea-Food BBQ was prepared by chef Rohan and his staff on a grill right @ the beach.
We definitely felt like king & queen that evening – truly unforgettable experience!
Thanks to the creative guys who've made the sand decoration!

I’ve mentioned to chef Rohan on our last evening that I’ve fallen in love with one of the Sri Lankan typical desserts, which we’ve tasted on one of the evenings. (Similar to a rolled crêpe filled with coconut & honey and gets served with Ice cream.) Rohan was sad that I didn’t mention this earlier. At check-out (before boarding our return transfer to Colombo (again with our favourite driver) Chef Rohan brought us a box in which contained our favourite dessert. We’ve eaten our delicious snack half way back to Colombo and savoured every single bite! Rohan, thanks a million for this, it was the best good-bye present!

I would also like to thank Rohan, Front Office Manager who also frequently checked if everything is fine and in case of questions always provides us with the desired answer and explanation.

We’ve fully enjoyed our relaxed vacation and recharged our batteries and can truly recommend this wonderful place to everyone.

(fyi: ATM machine are max. 10min bike ride away from the hotel - bikes are available at reception - first come first served basis and free of charge ... )

Fantastic hotel, location, super beach, food and service. The Aal carte lunch menu selection was not up to the expectation, but the buffet choices was excellent.
The white sand beach and shady trees were a big plus for us to cope with the hot weather.

If you're lucky to visit Uga Bay on a moon-lit night, an unreal feeling will hit you as you enter the finely manicured gardens. The private dining arranged tastefully on the beach will enchant young couples, and for the rest of you the sound of cascading water from the fountains will form the perfect back-drop. Perhaps all this may make you wonder whether you've somehow stumbled on the mythical fountains of paradise.
And stumble you will, unless you're extremely careful!

We only saw Uga Bay at night, when we dropped in for dinner from a nearby hotel, hoping to enjoy a different kind of experience. Unfortunately, we found that the hotel's designers, while doing an excellent job with creating a captivating surrealistic atmosphere, had failed miserably at ensuring even a rudimentary level of safety.

At Uga, ridiculously dim lighting and the absence of well-lit footpaths turns even a leisurely night stroll into a hazardous undertaking. To compound the problem the main bar has metallic chords strung from the ceiling to the floor. These have the potential of badly injuring the unwary visitor, should he or she get entangled in them.
Yours Truly is a good example of a recent victim ..... of course the Management was sympathetic once the damage had been done.

But we still feel that with a little more attention to safety and practicality, Uga Bay has the potential to carry its guests to the stars!! Best of luck.
