Arankelle Ancient Monastery
Attraction details
Reviewed 17 March 2015 via mobile

Arankele has become an archaeological site, a biological hotspot and a garden of medicinal plants subject to the changing character of nature. Walking through the path at the end of the day one can catch a glimpse of the yellow robe of a Bhikkhu on his way to the pond or retreating to his meditation grounds after a walk. The sight takes you 800 years back, when Arhant Maliyadeva, the last Arhant of Sri Lanka, spent his time meditating at Arankele

A smaller and easier to reach that Ritigala to the north, Arankele is a lovely site in the process of restoration. The wooded paths are nice to stroll along as you view bathing ponds, double foundations for former buildings that seem unique to this site. Very atmospheric and calming.

Arankele Forest Monastery is a haven of peace and quietude. The site was of an ancient forest monastery. Today it is a celebrated archaeological site containing the ruins of the ancient forest monastery. The stone pillars prove the skills of architectures who worked on this site.
