Not sure what to expect and after a 6 hour drive from Melbourne, we were not sure we were even on the right road when we approached Paynes Hut. We were in for an exceptional surprise. This is a hidden gem, handcrafted by Tess and Graham over many years amidst the serene, yet powerful highlands. The accomodation and bedding were exceptional, surpassed only by Tess and Grahams hospitality and genuine warmth and perhaps the lemon myrtle steak served up for dinner on a bed of local vegetables and produce or their home made jams and fruit bread. Brilliant and can't wait to get back there with family and friends.

Room tip: Cabins are just that. No tvs or electrical outlets. Bliss!

Went with friends, as a treat after lockdown and what a surprise on our arrival to walk into an absolute oasis in the middle of the mountains.
Grae and Tess have created an idyllic getaway creating rustic however very comfortable accommodation and a garden to just drool over. Such welcoming and charming hosts. We shall definitely return

Wonderful simply wonderful. Beautiful rustic/luxe off the grid accommodation that is perfect for a group or equally perfect for a couple who want time to themselves.

The garden takes your breath away, the outdoor kitchen/dining is charming, the bar and barbeque area inviting, the quaint hothouse, the verandah overlooking the ponds, so many lovely areas to sit, read or relax.

Our first stay was 1 night with another couple and we had a wondrous meal provided by the hosts and a delicious breakfast the next morning. We could not wait to share Paynes Hut with other friends and ended up a with a 2 night stay with 2 other couples a fortnight later. Need we say that all our friends were equally besotted.

But above all it was the feeling that Paynes Hut instils that impressed us the most. We could imagine the landed gentry when they first settled Australia wanting all the comforts from home, palatial bedrooms, extremely comfortable beds, stunning bathrooms surrounded by beautiful gardens. The soaring dining area in the main building with its long table would have been perfect to entertain and regale all and sundry.

None of this would be anywhere near as impressive and satisfying without the most consummate hosts we have experienced in a long time. Tess and Graeme are astounding. Their flair, inventiveness, building and gardening skills, culinary delights and willingness to ensure your stay is comfortable and enjoyable can not be faulted. They value your privacy on one hand but are more than happy to share some of their amazing stories about their evolving and interesting background if prompted. Thank you Tess and Graeme for sharing your little bit of paradise with us, Karen and Peter. PS we are hunting up more friends we’ll see you next year

Room tip: all the rooms have lovely views of the garden and surrounding countryside

This is one of the most extraordinary and beautiful rustic romantic remote b&b’s I’ve ever had the privilege of coming across. Just incredible. Everything from the gorgeous outdoor kitchen, the outdoor bar beside the roaring fire, and amazingly beautiful dining room floating up above. The hosts Tess and Graeme are just divine welcoming warm interesting but not intrusive. In the middle of the Australian alps. Could not recommend more highly. And have heard Tess’ 7 hour smoked lamb is to die for.

We’ve been may times and love the atmosphere and the welcome from Tess and Gray, the beautiful hosts. Rooms and buildings are quirky, stylish and creative. Garden setting stepping through the gates is stunning Food is bliss, home grown and made on site. If you love a five star bush experience under a million Australian alpine stars, this is it.
