Walked out there last week on the breakwater on a lovely fall sunny day. On return did a walk on the beach which immediately fronts the closed patio. VERY SAD to see how much trash is on the beach mostly in the form of empty beer cans and clear plastic straws and SOLO drink cups. Picked up a bag full yet there are many more bag fulls to be had! After watching the new documentary Plastic Oceans while on island this summer this broke my heart to see. Someone who owns Ballard's should make it a point to get out there and clean this up and keep it from entering the ocean which is already badly contaminated with plastic that never goes away!!!!!

We knew it would be a costly visit, but Ballard's is so convenient to the ferry terminal. Our last day, we biked from our house there and spent a good part of the day. Pros: beach chairs, food, drinks available. Cons: prices, and absolutely miserable showers if you want to clean up after the beach. Facilities were nice, but paying 2 bucks for a 2 minute ice cold shower is silly. I talked to another visitor who said no hot water last year. They have to fix this.

$25 ferry ticket. $17 rental lounge chair. $11 mixed drinks. The view and the water were sooooo worth it. We'll be back. Note you do not need to rent a chair you can bring your own, we also brought sandwiches and water, they don't allow you to bring in alcohol. So you can have a great time just for the price of the ferry ticket. Water is crystal clear and not a speck of seaweed. No rocks, no shells. Just perfect.

Close to the ferry landing but the crowds, live music and TVs made for too much activity for us. They were doing bag checks as you come on the property, not for weapons but to make sure no one was smuggling alcohol in. The menu look OK but we didn't stay to eat, we went searching for a more peaceful location.

To be fair, in my experience, there are both pros and cons to this beach. It's ideally located very near the pier & port so you can step off the ferry and walk here like we did and spend the day here if that's what you're looking to do. We had 5 little kids with us who ended up having a blast in the water at the beach here in spite of the fact that the waves were rough and the water very cold. I stepped into the water and couldn't believe how cold it was so I stepped back out and decided to rent a chair and just sit and relax instead. I will say it was convenient that you can rent a beach chair or reclining lounge chair here on the beach and they even bring it out for you wherever you wish to sit. Nice customer service! FYI: I live in Florida where our beaches have much warmer water. They had restrooms nearby if you needed it and even a restaurant on the beach if you are hungry. So in that sense it was convenient also for people just wanting to make an easy beach day out of their visit to Block Island. However, depending on your mood, this may or may not be the place for you. They had a live band playing loud music the day we went but the band was good so it didn't seem to bother anyone. This beach seems more like a party beach for people from the mainland. If you're looking for a quiet beach this is definitely NOT for you. If you're looking for seclusion this is NOT for you. But if you don't mind all the crowds of people, the loud music and the rough waves on this side of the island then you'll probably like this beach.
