Had an 11 night stay here at beginning of October. We arrived in the early hours(2 am) ans were given a room on the 2nd floor(203).When we tried to get into room as key wouldnt work,we heard calling from inside,it was already occupied!!
After changing the room and the appologies of the receptionist,we were given another room on the 2nd floor(217)
This room was so badly in need of refurb and it looked out onto a side street which we didnt appreciate.Another trip to reception to be told we couldnt change as hotel was full but to see reception manager in the morning. This we did and we were told we could change but not until next day as people leaving, rooms cleaning etc.As it turned out,we were given a room later that day on the 4th floor(410) and it was bigger, brighter, better decor and bigger balcony which looked out onto the main street and a view of the beach and sea.
There is a swimming pool(unheated)on the roof and being pool, rather than beach people,we spent most days up there sunbathing. There is a bar but....it doesnt open till 4pm and as we usually finished our sunbathing by about 3 pm,was of no use to us or others as we did question the staff on this but was told it was because it was end of season..hard luck us for going there in Oct it seems.
The food....poor to say the least with unsmiling, unhelpful staff who looked like they would rather be somewhere else.Breakfast is the same every morning, being scrambled egg,bacon..and then a rotation of either baked beans, mushrooms(tinned) and small sausages, along with the usual continental choices and toast(providing you were willing to wait about 15 mins for it to toast and dried it out to cardboard)tea,coffee.juice.
Evening meals were always a mix of one meat and one fish dish with either chips.rice, pasta and occasionally potatoes,or a salad choice. The food was always luke warm at best.
Drinks with evening meal have to be purchased from the restaurant, including water as we found when we took our own small bottles of water but were told we could not consume them.
When we were there,a large coach party arrived for a weeks stay and the restaurant could not cope as it was not big enough to cope with to many people, which meant on 3 occasions during that time,we went down to dinner but found crowds of people waiting outside to be given a table,it looked like a doctors waiting room!!.we refused to wait and ended up going out to eat which although was a nice change, was not something we had budgeted for.
Monte Gordo is a quiet resort with limited shops etc.but the beach is lovely so if your looking for something lively, then be aware.
All in all,was a let down especially as i have Portugese parentage and this was my 1st visit to the country.

Room tip: 4th 5th and 6th floors looking out onto main street

we were on the 6th floor, we had a great seaview ,the room was large and very clean ,the staff came in everyday to clean ,the only thing I would say was you could have done with an armchair ,and there was room as there was 3 beds in the room

Room tip: the higher the room the better the view at the front of the hotel

Stated for 4 nights, hotel is good for a base if you are looking for a quiet, relaxed, beach getaway. Room was clean but basic. Very quiet hotel and area. We stayed on a B&B basis, breakfast was edible but not great. Great location close to beach, shops and restaurants. Room doesn’t have a fridge or tea making facilities. I would also recommend taking your own hairdryer as the one in the room is from the stoneage!

Pool area at top of hotel is nice, probably the most modern of whole hotel!

Overall a pleasant short stay, staff were friendly and helpful.

Monte Gordo has a wonderful beach but its commerce and attractions have unfortunately not been directed to the portuguese public. However, the beach is quite pleaseant.

Hotel Baía was terribly renovated, is poorly cleaned and is in desperate need for refurbishment. Its staff is unprepared. Took a look at the room, asked for another, which was even worse.

We ended up staying at Hotel Vasco da Gama, across the road a just a little bit more expensive. Worth the extra euros.

Room tip: Choose another hotel.
