MedPlaya Hotel San Eloy
Ranked #23 of 43 Hotels in Tossa de Mar
Reviewed 29 September 2017

We are a family of four adults who holiday three or more times every year mostly all inc to Spain, Portugal and Spanish Islands.
We booked this last minute as a cheapie end of season break 18th to 25th Sep 2017.
We chose San Eloy after reading the many positive tripadvisor reviews and the fact that so many people seem to return year after year.
We enjoyed the break despite the San Eloy rather than because of it as we definitely would not have booked had we known what it was really like.
The reason for this review is that I wish to correct the inaccuracies and false five star praise that some people are giving to a resort that clearly has major problems.
Where else have these poor unfortunates been holidaying that could be so much worse than this place. Why are they so easily pleased.that they keep returning when there are resorts at similar prices that offer so much more and are so much better in every way. I agree with most of the negative comments. This place sucks.

The resort is too far away from Tossa for most to walk but is set in beautiful surroundings. The exterior resembles an ivy covered romantic Spanish castle.
Sadly upon entry the interiors of the castle resemble a run down Butlins holiday camp circa 1960. To say this needs a lick of paint is a gross understatement.
It needs torn down and rebuilt.
Uneven cracked roadways and paving, many rickety steps and a first floor restaurant where the only entrance is by an external fire escape are a danger to everyone and make it a no go area for young families the elderly and the disabled. I could not believe it in this day and age.
Cleanliness does not seem a priority as everywhere seems to need a good clean.
The maid service is virtually non existent and we discovered that you are treated ike a second class citizen if you have not booked direct with hotel.
We got a clean once in seven days if you can call it a clean. We were told that we were not entitled to daily maid service as we had booked as a package.
Only those who book direct with hotel get full maid service. I am dumbfounded
The food is average all inc but I have had better even in a similar star rated hotel. No excuse for cold food when supposedly in a heated gantry tray.
The plates are horrible most have big chips out of the edges are soaking wet when layed in dispenser and some are still dirty.
The staff are with a couple of exceptions generally sullen and unhelpful. Two drinks policy is strictly enforced. The convenience store has to be seen to be believed it is empty...I mean empty.
The Animacion/entertainment team are pretty average in a different league to the ones we normally experience. They could have done a lot more especially for more discerning adults. The evening shows and games were dated and amateurish as were the daytime acticities.
The free hourly bus is great but I am sure peak season will struggle to cope.
In short this resort has a whole string of negatives and not too many positives. We did not expect much but were still very dissapointed
I fail to see just what could be improved with a simple cosmetic refurb. I will be interested to see the 2018 reviews.

Dear EdinburghBigjim,
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with regards to your stay at the MedPlaya San Eloy.
We are sorry to hear that we did not meet your expectations. As you have read on reviews, many people return year after year as they enjoy the friendly atmosphere and find the Hotel to be good value for money. We are sad to hear that you did not find this to be the case.
We are sorry that our cleanliness standards have not been up to expectations and we are sorry that you did not know about the cleaning service when you booked with your hotel supplier.
We apologize if you perceived poor customer service from our staff members. As you will see on different websites, our staff is one of our strong points and highly rated for our customers.
As you have seen, the refurbish for next year will provide air conditioning to the new superior rooms and the complete renovation of swimming pools and outdoor areas.
We value our customers feedback as gives us an opportunity to further enhance our services and achieve our customers satisfaction.
We would love to have another opportunity to offer our services and regain your confidence in MedPlaya hotels.
Best regards,
Laura

Stayed from 16th Sept to 23rd Sept 2017. The building facade itself is lovely. It's a castle! The rooms need a minor paint job but otherwise no complaints, daily housekeeping were great. The food is all inclusive 2* (sometimes the same, sometimes cold, if you want it warm get there at the specified times) again for 2* and the price you pay stop complaining. We had 2 pack lunches which were the best we've had from even a 4 star! As for the staff they were all polite and accommodating. During my stay I had more sympathy for the staff than guests (it's the luck of the draw who you have to share a complex with, not the hotels fault). The entertainment team were just great. So good with the children and then later in the evening with the adults. Sam on the bar needs a special mention for his dedication to making sure people had a great time. Love and Aigars were amazing animators! The walk into Tossa only took 20 mins and we wanted to walk as it takes you through some lively little woodland. Sant eloi has a free bus for all inclusive, or 1 euro if not, every hour from 9am till 9pm. A nice mention for the bus driver who was a great driver and had to deal with families that were less than pleasant. The sant eloi is having a refurb in 2018 and even before that i would recommend based mainly on the staffs integrity and politeness in the face of less than pleasant guests. 2 star hotel that deserves at least 3 star. I've stayed in worse 4 stars! From a 2 holiday per year reviewer.

If you're reading this and you've not booked here yet - good, you have the chance to find somewhere decent! If not, I'd strongly advise amending your booking.

We choose this hotel as it came up on a search for 3* hotels with Thomson and seemed a reasonable price for all inclusive and facilities looked good. TripAdvisor said 4/5 so thought great! How wrong I was. For starters this isn't even a 3* hotel it's a 2* and that's just the beginning.

So what was wrong with the San Eloy? Nearly everything; rude staff who would never even say hello such as when you walk into the 'restaurant' and ignore you at the bar, the dirt and rubbish in communal areas - pile of dirty plates and glasses left for days at bottom of our stairs (have photos!), dangerous flooring in communal areas (our daughter tripped over several times), cheap and unpleasant food, plates always dripping wet in restaurant, very dirty high chairs (thank goodness I packed sterilising wipes), slippery steps (the type with big gaps between treads to get to restaurant - not good if you've a fear of heights, paint peeling off everywhere. Rails on balcony felt too far apart and nervous letting our daughter go out there. People playing their own blaring awful music so loud but no staff would get them to turn it off. Horrible cheap pre-mix cocktails and only 5 options on AI option. Only 2 drinks per person (even if you also need a bottle of water), ceiling of bar area covered in damp and leaking when raining (have photos). Very loud music at night. Sun beds many cracked (plastic). Restaurant often had ants in it and very hard to find table with cutlery etc set up so had to get it all yourself (think school/prison canteen). No air con although weather was pretty bad while there (mid Sept) so not a major issue but would be if anything above 22°c. The 'mini golf' is an area of green felt with a few boards and holes- unbelievably they charge to use it. Oh and don't expect to find much in the 'supermarket' on site as the shelves were nearly all empty.

The whole place needs tearing down and rebuilding from scratch. Nice area and town but stay in a different hotel unless you are not interested in any form of quality on your holiday and want to feel like you're staying at a prison with a pool.

On the day we arrived we rang Thomson to say we weren't happy and wanted alternative accommodation. The rep wanted to charge the rate plus admin fee, so we booked it ourselves, found a fab 4* in the town (#2 on TA) for the last 3 days (would've been the whole week if we could've afforded it) and had an amazing time there.

All I can say is thank goodness for the free bus to escape on 'day-release' and that we had been able to afford somewhere else to stay the last few days. I have no idea who wrote the 4+5* reviews but surely they weren't staying here. I will add my photos. I will also be contacting Thomson again about our bad experience as we really aren't happy.

Safe to say we won't be returning!!

Arrived at around 10.00am and reported to the reception 'hut' and thought it would be a quick and easy checkin as we were the only unfortunate souls to get off the coach. How wrong were we!! Took about 15 minutes and we were quite prepared for our room not to be ready which was proved right. However, we were not aware that our all inclusive did not start until 1.00pm. We left our luggage in the cupboard outside and had a look around. Didn't take long as not a lot to see and it then began to rain. Went back to 'reception ' only to find another coach load had been dropped off and so we waited in the queue for 45 more minutes to get our key for the room. While we were there we asked for our all inclusive bands as by this time it was 12.15 and the guy behind the reception was telling everyone to come back at 1.00pm for their bands also. By this time we had been there 2 hours and didn't really see the point in queuing again but rules are rules and he wouldn't budge so reluctantly made our way to our room.

Top floor room, very old fashioned and not particularly comfortable. Curtains were mouldy and it smelt of smoke. Small balcony overlooking the crazy golf (don't expect much as that too was very run down and threadbare). Fridge didn't work and didn't really fancy moving it in case something nasty came out from behind it. The beds were 2 singles pushed together and were extremely uncomfortable, my husband even ended up with a bad back after just 2 nights! The shower was powerful and always had hot water BUT as the week went on a very nasty smell was coming from the drains in the bathroom or from the bath/sink plug holes. After the room was cleaned (which wasn't every day) and bleach had been poured down it was ok for a little while but the door had to be kept closed and when you went in you felt quite ill it was that bad.

The way the hotel is laid out there is no escaping the noise which goes on until 12.00a.m. and even then people's voices echo around the place. We had really noisy people on the ground floor below us and each night they were out chatting to each other till 3.00am even when I had asked them to keep the noise down they continued. Some people are just inconsiderate to others. We went to recharge our batteries and came home absolutely shattered. Not a place to go if you want rest and relaxation. I don't think we had more than 4 hours sleep a night as once the night people went quiet the children and staff began to stir.

Breakfast was very often cold so thankfully there was toast and jam. Lunch was a bit warmer and the evening meal was really the only 'hot' meal in the restaurant. Very poor choice and I am not a fussy eater. Lived on pasta, sauce and a bread roll. The snack bar however kept us fed during lunchtimes as it was cooked to order. Lovely toasties and chips always super hot. We only in fact ate lunch in the restaurant on our first day as we preferred the snack bar - for the food and the service with a smile.

Bar staff extremely organised and served us with a smile.

Entertainment all day every day and loud until midnight. They worked extremely hard and to be fair were reasonably good. Didn't pester you to join in. Kids and adults loved the pool dance and the many activities.

This hotel is extremely run down with many broken floor tiles around the pool and not somewhere you can go bare foot. I didn't get in the pool as it just didn't look inviting. The whole grounds look tired and it looks as though everyone has just given up trying to keep it maintained.

The bus into town broke down while we were there so walked into the main town daily just to escape the noise. Tossa de Mar is a lovely town with many winding streets and lots of places to eat, drink and purchase different things. Had a lovely coffee and cake for just €3.

No way would I recommend this hotel but we will go back to Tossa de Mar and we will steer well clear of the San Eloy and look with pity at any of the poor unfortunate souls who get off the bus at this destination.

So not a 3* - to be honest the hostels in town looked cleaner and more inviting.
