Checked in with my wife and 4 children, went to the pool area. No sunbeds available by any pool.
Many sun beds "reserved" without anybody using them.

Checked out.

It's an hour drive from the Phuket Airport, but definitely worth it. This is a fabulous property on Khao Lak's finest beach. We enjoyed the surf on their free body-boards, and were happy to be served cold glasses of water by the ever attentive staff. A nice touch on the beach that I have not encountered before.

Our pool room was great. The rain shower, the comfortable furniture and beds, and direct pool access made us reluctant to leave our room! Everything was immaculate, and all amenities were provided in abundance. The layout of the hotel, with long meandering canals, is such that the pool outside the pool rooms feels very quiet and private, unlike other hotels where a pool room may open to a cast of thousands. Our room was dead silent. We couldn't hear a peep from neighbors beside or above, and when the glass doors were closed, nothing from the outside. Great for sleeping.

Service was excellent throughout, and the Marriott "At Your Service" system is second to none. The resort is so large it may take a few minutes for people to get to your room, but they always get it right. A room service meal arrived only 15 minutes after ordering.

The breakfast is great, lacking nothing. Live stations serve a variety of western, Thai, Chinese and bakery items. We dined at "Olive", the Mediterranean restaurant and everything was good if a bit pricey.

We can't wait to get there again!

Room Tip: The pool rooms are worth the extra money.

In Feb of 2012, my family had a Thai holiday were we stayed at the Courtyard in Bangkok dor 2 nights, then the Holiday Inn on Phi Phi Island for 6 nights, then the JW Marriott in Khao Lak for 6 nights.

We all agreed it was the most beautifully hotel and the staff are so very nice and full of smiles.

The our room was poolside which added to the pleasure. The pools are insanely huge and very nice. The room was nicely laid out and very attractive.

The issue with the room was many of the nice features did not work. The Entertainment system did not work, the wifi did not work, the shutters between the bathroom and bedroom were tangled and did not work. All were fixed promptly, but not what you would expect from a JW.

There was a great selection of restaurants, but again many, many errors. Wrong meals delivered (including room service the night we arrived), ilregular portions. Example: my daughter ordered a half portion of paste and I ordered a normal portion. Her portion was greater than mine and their explanation was that here type of paste (linguini) comes in a larger portion than my type of paste (Penne). The shrimp in my wife shrimp soup was not cleaned. The next day they send a fruit basket with an apology, the the name on the card was a different family. Not sure if the error was the name or they apologizes to multiple families that night.
This went on for about 50% of our meals there.

While any one error is normal, it was the accumulation of errors that annoyed us.

At the end, it was nice, but my two daughters (8 & 11), my wife and I all agreed we did not want to return to this hotel in the future.

Sad as this hotel and it's staff was so nice and could have been te perfect place.

A very nice resort on a lovely beach, the JW Marriott did not disappoint, except if you take seriously those reviews who say it is 'the best resort they've ever seen'. Certainly it is no Four Seasons or Six Senses but it is very nice, well kept, clean and is on a nice beach.
We went over Christmas/New Year (I'm very delayed in sending this review out) but the hotel never felt crowded. There are plenty of quiet nooks to relax, read or swim.
Our favourite part of the hotel were all the beach huts next to it for lunches and dinners with fantastic Thai food. We ate spectacularly well each evening for about $25 for 3 of us! Our favourites were Mama's Greeting (with the best spicy seafood glass noodle salad), Blue Mist for the best shrimp fritters ever, Andaman, etc. They were pretty much all terrific!
The hotel breakfast was a great way to start the day, with plenty of choice, the pool was nice for a long swim and the beach was quite nice except that the water is not very clear and you cannot snorkel off of it. My son had an awesome time at the beach since the waves were super high when we were there and, borrowing a boogey board from the activities desk, this occupied much of every day for him.
To consider: If you get 2 double beds, they are actually more like 2 single beds and one is not large enough for a couple to comfortably sleep on (and we are very slim). We subsequently changed rooms to a king sized bed and my son used the day bed which they make into a bed and was actually quite comfortable and of a good length.
Outings: We took 3 day trips. The first was to see Phuket - Phuket old town is really not worth seeing at all! We took a private cab for the day which cost us about $100US and did old town, a shopping area near it and then went out to Patong Beach which was fun and kitchy to see - definitely never need to go back there and if I had to do it again I would just omit old town from the itinerary and spend more of the day in Patong.
Trip 2 was to James Bond Island and canoeing in the caves. Since we're huge James Bond fans this was fun to see and was a good day out. Trip 3 was to one of the Elephant camps to take an elephant for a walk and bathe it. Since the seas were too rough for snorkeling and scuba diving this was a last moment trip just for a change of scenery but was fun and my 9 year old LOVED bathing the elephant. We have very cool pix of this!
New Year's eve we did not join the hotel reception, opting for a big dinner on the beach but then came back in time for the fire performers and fireworks. They put on a very nice show!
Overall, a fun and relaxing week. I would recommend to someone wanting a quite week in the area but probably wouldn't go back since there are so many other places to explore.

Wonderful surroundings, intimate and well-kept resort suitable both for adult couples and families. The immense pool is superb and the spa is gorgeous. Excellent restaurants with surprisingly reasonable prices. The only thing lacking was the English skills of some of the staff. Altogether a most enjoyable stay, am definitely returning to this place!
