Andaman Bangtao Bay Resort

We dined at Andaman Bangtao Bay Resort (YUM) the night before we moved from our alternative accomodation (at a huge crowded resort - Best Western mistake) to the tranquil perfection of this little piece of paradise. Than and his family and staff are wonderful 'hosts' and the location could not be surpassed (unless you wanted to reside on the cliff at Cape Sienna as a style variation option). Don't expect to do laps in the pool, it is tiny, but that did not deter our enthusiasm for this treasure of a place. My husband and I could not speak highly enough of our time at Andaman Bangtao Bay Resort and will not only recommend it but also return ourselves. If your mind, body and soul needs restoration, this is the place for you. Cheryl & JB

We can't say enough good things about our experience at this resort. The staff is wonderful, the bungalows are at the water's edge, the food is excellent. We had a 11:00 PM flight out of Phuket, and we were able to keep our rooms for the day at no extra charge! The owner is a delightful lady who loves to visit. We stayed for 3 nights, but could have stayed a week!

Room Tip: We had the "honeymoon" bungalow which was offered at the same price as the "beachfron...

I hate to give an across the board review but we had such a fine time here it deserves it. The bungalows are directly on the beach with doors and windows that face beachward. Access to local boats and seadoos is just a step outside your door. There are a number of eating establishments within walking distance from biergarten to (Thai)Italian to beachside Thai dining. Prices now are about 200B per person. Our "concierge" Than was more than helpful in every request. this is a wonderful place to come to rest and take a Thai massage on the beach (350B). The pictures attached to this hotel still reflect it's current condition so I did not add any new photos.

Gosh. I read one damning review and got a bit scared. But this place is truly heavenly. Not so sure about the food at the resort yet, but there are heaps of restaurants and cafes around to chose from. I've got a week and a few days here and friends arriving over next few days. But so far, I am being looked after when I need it, and left alone when I need it.
The beach really 20 steps from my room is not rocky at all. Clean. Slight rocking waves. Truly is could not be better. The bed is comfortable, the bathroom huge and probably authentic thai cottage in style.
I have just had lunch at yummy Thai cafe and feel very lucky to be here.

Room Tip: All rooms are gorgeous here. Right on the edge of the sea shore.

We stayed at Andman Bangtao Bay Resort for 8 nights in March/April. We found the grounds to be well maintained and the staff to be very helpful and friendly. It is a small place, with only 16 or so rooms. They are truly all right on the beach, and this was the only place we saw on Bangtao Beach to have all the rooms with this good of proximity to the ocean. Every room has a small front porch area with chairs to sit and stare at the ocean. There are lounge chairs under palm trees and thatch shelters, and there is even an open-air thatch-covered shelter with 2 massage tables. They arranged for the masseuses to come for us every afternoon for 350Baht/hour massage.

The rooms were large and as clean as you could keep them considering all the sand that comes with being at the beach. Beach towels were provided, too. Water and soda in the fridge were free and replaced as often as you needed. There was space for the very large bed, as well as an extra single bed they brought in for us which folded up against the wall during the day. Our room had a nice big bay window with a window seat which we loved, but we noticed not all of the rooms had this feature. We wished there were more hooks for towels, hats, and wet clothes, though. Rooms all had TVs (with mostly Thai language channels), bug nets, A/C, hair dryers, and a fridge. There was free wi-fi, which was fast enough for Skype, and reached to most of the rooms, as well as in the restaurant and from the outside lounge chairs.

The breakfast is included in the rate, and we just ordered anything off the breakfast menu. The fresh fruit was particularly nice, but otherwise the breakfast food was pretty standard (eggs, toast, waffles). We would have preferred to have real coffee instead of instant Nescafe, though!! Other lunch/dinner food was fine as well. We liked the spicy soup, but nothing else really stood out as exceptional.

There were tons of nearby restaurants to choose from. Up the beach were plenty of delicious little beachfront local places, street food-type vendors, and larger hotel restaurants. We also LOVED a few of the more expensive places to eat on Surin Beach, and discovered the Blue Siam (just across the little river to the south of the hotel) on our last night, which had great atmosphere and yummy, though a bit more pricy, food.

The swimming pool was quite small, but clean and perfect to take a dip in. There isn't a "deep" end, nor is there a gradual depth entrance good for little children. It was fine for our 3-year-old, but older kids might be underwhelmed, and you certainly couldn't swim laps.

Negatives of staying at this resort:
Taxis around the island were expensive. One-way fares were 200 to Surin Beach (a mere 15 minute walk away!), 400 further up Bangtao Beach to other hotels/restaurants, 600 to Patong. If you plan to go somewhere every day, budget this in, as it really added to our cost of going shopping or out to dinner.

The beach directly in front of the hotel is a bit rocky and is not great for sunbathing or swimming, especially at high tide. The beach and sand are much better just a 2-3 minute walk up the beach, though, and we didn't have any problems with this, even with a 3-year-old and all of her "stuff" to haul around. Bangtao Beach itself is really long and nice. The waves were rough on windy, rainy days, but very gentle and nice for kids to play in on the other days. The sand was good for playing in. Even after a multi-day storm, the hotels were working really hard to keep the beach clean of garbage, debris, and seaweed that washed up. The major hotels along the beach roped off their swimming areas to keep the boats out. Where there weren't ropes, the longtail boats parked to pick up snorkelers, and there were several jet-skis being rented out (and buzzing constantly out in the ocean). The water was clean and warm and really nice for swimming.

I was hoping to run along the beach in the mornings, but due to a substantial incline in the sand, it was nearly impossible except at low tide. While the beach is long and beautiful, running at a steep angle wasn't very pleasant. At low tide it was more doable, but who wants to run in the hot, hot afternoon??

We were unlucky enough to have terrible weather for the first 3-4 days of our stay. 2 of these days had pouring rain from morning til night. While you can't do anything about the weather, we found this hotel a frustrating place to be during the rainy days because there was no comfortable indoor space to be in. The restaurant was OK, but not a particularly bright or relaxing place to spend a few hours on a rainy day. The rooms, while fine for sleeping and a bit of relaxing, felt uncomfortable and claustrophobic by the 2nd rainy day. We regretted not booking into a place that had a larger indoor public area, an indoor kid's playroom, or a variety of restaurants/bars to choose from...these regrets went away once the sun came out, though! You might want to think about this drawback if you'll be here with kids during any potential rainy season.

Overall impressions: This was a nice place, and was pretty much as we expected. We really liked the smaller size of this hotel as compared to the larger resorts down the beach. We also liked being right on the ocean, though we wished our beach was as good as the one 50 meters down from us. We are in search of the "ideal" hotel that is right on the perfect beach, has terrific food, and is affordable. While this is getting there, it is not quite perfect....we likely won't stay here again, but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and were happy with the value for the money. We would recommend this hotel as long as the drawbacks above were noted. What bothered us may not be a problem for someone else!
