Lovely property but very rude reception

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 27 Jul 2024
I have very mixed feelings about this hotel. One the one hand, the property is stunning, in a great location with beautiful gardens and well designed, modern rooms. On the other, the service is very patchy - while the restaurant and bar staff are mostly fantastic, the front of house can best be described as unfriendly and we had one of the worst check-in experiences I've ever had.

The good: the restaurant is laid back but the service is always attentive and the food is great and very well priced for what is a high-end dining experience. The setting - outside, at the edge of the hotel gardens - is lovely. We also did a wine tasting with the hotel sommelier, Javier, which was a huge amount of fun and a real highlight of our stay.

The bad: front of house really don't seem to have any interest in making guests feel welcoming or any desire to help guests out.
My wife and I arrived at the hotel after a long trip from New York, hoping for a relaxing experience. When we reached the reception, there were several suitcases open on the floor and clothes spread on the chairs at the reception desk, so we could not sit down. Not only was there no apology for the mess everywhere, we were not offered even a drink of water, let alone juice or anything else (apparently the tradition is to have a glass of lemonade made from lemons grown on the property). We booked through Leading Hotels of the World, but the receptionist made no attempt to explain the benefits we’re supposed to get. The room we were shown was spacious but the a/c barely worked. The following day, this same receptionist actually instructed me not to talk to him and we felt uncomfortable walking through the reception area for the next several days. Later on the day after we checked in, the hotel manager, Bjorn, did apologize for what had happened and offered to move us to a larger room with its own pool, which was lovely and with fully functioning a/c. He seemed genuinely upset by what had happened, but of course that doesn't erase the behavior of his staff.

Overall: there were some wonderful people at the hotel who really improved our stay after a very unfortunate start.

Four magical days at Castell Son Claret have just come to an end. The first thing that strikes you is the sheer beauty of the property, inside and out - everything is immaculate, the grounds, the public areas, the rooms. It’s obvious that there is attention to detail and a huge amount of pride from all the team. The staff are incredibly polite and bend over backwards to be helpful. From Stefania in the restaurant to Roberto at the bar, and the excellent reception team.

Our room was spectacular, the Ren products are divine and the showers are wonderful - the true rainfall experience. The beds are very comfortable and individual duvets is such a lovely touch, making sure no one hogs all of it!

We ate all of our meals at the hotel, breakfast was a highlight with attentive service and a very tasty buffet, the pastry chef knows what they are doing! The cooked to order eggs were great and the speed at which food and our essential morning coffee arrived were spot on.

Lunches by the pool were just what you’d expect, comfort food with a Spanish touch, and the choice of eating at your lounger or at a table was very much appreciated. The pool itself is remarkable, in immaculate condition, huge and so refreshing.

Dinner at Sa Olivera was enjoyable, with a drink from Roberto beforehand in the bar. The tables are all incredibly romantic and the setting feels like a mix of Mallorca and Tuscany. Our sea bass in salt was ginormous, too much for the two of us, but delicious. The wine list as well was comprehensive and although not an expert on my Spanish wines the help from the team meant we tried a spectacular red and white during our stay.

We also dined at their Michelin star restaurant, Sa Clastra, taking the full menu and wine pairing. Although a shame we couldn’t eat in the courtyard, the internal setting was romantic and the service just what you would expect. I can see why the restaurant has a Michelin star and to find this level of cooking with a creative Mallorcan influence was a pleasure.

On checkout we were able to use the spa before our evening flight and that is also worth visiting, although we didn’t have a treatment I would imagine they would also be top notch.

Although we have only just left I’m plotting my return trip - this is a fab spot and one I’d love to return to.

Room tip: Room 101 is beyond spectacular!

We stayed as part of a wedding group in early May. The hotel & grounds are stunning and very beautiful - the wedding aspect went very well.

I had issues with the air conditioning - this was not working in our suite the entire weekend, the rooms were so hot this is despite being told it would be turned on the next day - it was not. Complaint was not followed up and we had to sweat it out.

Restaurant staff were awful, impossible to place any kind of order for drinks or food. They ignored you, walked off or took your order and were never to be seen again. If you are there for an evening event, they will close the kitchen for the entire afternoon so there is no food available, not ideal when you are isolated. We had hungry children and the best they could manage was plain spaghetti we had to order multiple times and wait over an hour for. Very disappointing to not be able to access food or drinks. I genuinely have never seen such poor service in any hotel, let alone one of this ranking.

There was one high chair available for the entire restaurant so bear in mind if your child needs one, someone else would probably be using it.

Breakfast also wasn’t set up properly until after 9am, a bit useless for those hungry early risers.

The was a young man called Anton who was excellent on the front desk, very helpful. However there was an older man who was shockingly rude. I went to ask about food for my children (due to the fact there were no restaurant staff to be found at all in the outdoor dining area). He quite aggressively said, 'Do I look like I work in the restaurant?" "this is the reception desk, go to the restaurant", I was very surprised by his tone, especially when I approached the reception simply because I was unable to find anyone else who worked in the entire hotel – and this was early afternoon!

The night of the wedding a number of guests, myself, child and husband included were all very sick - I can only speculate whether a bug or the food, but it couldn't be coincidental we were all violently ill within the space of a few hours and had all been in the hotel for over 2 days without leaving.

Expect to be dehydrated – the cost of the water is very expensive considering you are unable to access drinkable water, its also hard to get hold of due to the poor service issues as mentioned above with the restaurant.

Wow, what a beautiful setting and building. The staff are amazing and so helpful - they even provided a buggy to take our bags to our room while we enjoyed a very welcome soft drink. The facilities are impeccable, and the whole vibe of the place is one of tranquil peace and quiet. This is understated luxury at its best, and is my new favourite destination.

Room tip: If you like Eggs for breakfast, order the 'Eggs Tramuntana' and you won't be disappointed!

This hotel is truly incredible and cannot recommend it enough. It looks beautiful, everywhere is immaculate with stunning grounds. Impeccably well kept and clean. However the most amazing thing by far is all of the staff we encountered, going above and beyond to help, so friendly, polite and really made our stay feel extra special! A total must stay!!!
