As a Canberra native who often visits the national cultural institutions located here, I would advise visitors to fit in a visit to the National Portrait Gallery if they can. It's a smaller collection, and a smaller venue, than the NGA or War Memorial; but the collection is full of interest and more diverse than you might think -portraiture is interpreted broadly. The NPG is well designed, with a human scale and user-friendly gallery spaces. The cafe is very good and the book shop and gift shop really excellent, offering a very wide range of titles and items. The covid arrangements are well thought out and don't affect the visitor experience.

Didn't have high expectations but was pleasantly surprised and managed to spend 90 minutes wandering around reviewing the many portraits. While I would have liked to have seen more paintings and less photographs - perhaps that's just me - it was very well set out and an enjoyable visit.

A smaller gallery compared to the large institutions with popular exhibits of portraits
personalities.

It was a great display very interesting throughly enjoyed it. You need to book as they only let so many in because of COVID which is great and it’s free

We were in the area visiting the NGV so decided to drop in. We booked free tickets on the website through our phone. We enjoyed the main galleries and the music artist section. Only issue was lack of secure place to leave our backpack.
