We booked onto the Cruise Whitsundays boat tour to Reefworld and were planning to take a flight over Heart Reef once we arrived at Hardy Reef. My husband asked the Hamilton Air chap on the boat (as he travels on the boat selling flights) if we were guaranteed a window seat as we didn't want to pay to see the reef and be sat in the middle of the helicopter. My husband was promised that one of each 'couple' was guaranteed a window seat and on this basis we booked the flight. When we came to board the helicopter the pilot and another guy put two women in the front and then their partners were then in each window which meant two couples had front and window seats and we were sat in the middle. We tried to tell one of the guys that we had been promised a window seat and he told us to sort it out ourselves with one of the guys in the window. I politely asked him if he would move and he refused as he was upset that he wasn't sat next to his wife! So, we were left stuck in the middle of the helicopter having been told to sort the seating out ourselves.
My gripe is that the guys loading should have asked the other guy in the window to move rather than leaving to to me as I'm sure he would have taken more notice of them than a random fellow tourist.
We have been on quite a few helicopter flights and fully understand that they have to be carefully weighted and that dictates where people can sit. However, on this occasion it clearly didn't matter who was sitting in one of the window seats so the dispatcher could have told the chap to move. We are used to dispatchers/pilots telling people where they should sit, not leaving it to the paying passengers to sort out as clearly there are selfish people who don't care about others.
Although we enjoyed the flight it left us disappointed and we were hoping to speak with the chap on the boat however once the flights were done and we were all back on the boat (and he didn't have to sell any flights) he was nowhere to be seen. It would have been nice of him to ask if we had enjoyed our flight but he clearly wasn't interested.
This has made us more wary now of helicopter flights, and taking what we are told as the truth. I am leaving this review to warn others that if you want a window seat you might not get it.
