Superb historic site that takes you back in time. We did the self guided tour and it gave us plenty of time to look at everything and transport you back in time. Loved the cottage with the layers of lino on the floor and the layers of wallpaper still intact on the walls. A must do when you are in Hobart.

After seeing so much at Port Arthur and Hobart city we thought this would be similar ?
It is pretty much four walls and an empty site that you can interpret what was there ?
Save your money and time for something else as we were very disappointed in this site

Dear Themessiahoffire
We appreciate you sharing your feedback and apologise that your experience did not meet your expectations. The Cascades Female Factory is a very different historic site to Port Arthur. Since it was in operation as a place of punishment and reform for female convicts in the 1800s, significant deterioration and removal of materials has occurred over time.
As one of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage Property, the attraction has undergone a large amount of restoration in recent years, in compliance with the Burra Charter, which defines basic principles for conservation of Australian heritage places. We purposefully keep the interpretation of the site to a minimum to provide visitors with a story that does not artificially impose new materials on the heritage site. We also offer Heritage Tours or Her Story dramatised tours as well as position guides around the site to share the history and answer any questions.
Starting early next year we will be kicking off a significant fundraising campaign to construct a new purpose-built History and Interpretation Centre to better tell these important stories of the convict women who helped build our nation.
Kind Regards,
Cascades Female Factory

There’s not much in the way of buildings to see, but the tour certainly fills you in on a very bleak history for the female prisoners. Worth doing.

Dear Texaroo2
Thank you for taking the time to share your review of your recent visit to the Cascades Female Factory. Since it was in operation as a place of punishment and reform for female convicts in the 1800s, significant deterioration and removal of materials has occurred over time. The Heritage Tour and Her Story dramatised tours are just some of the ways we look to impart the tales of tragedy (and triumph) of the women who passed through these walls.

This is a very clever and interactive tour; you're taken into the grim history of how these poor women coped with energy and wit and simple but powerful storytelling. We were taken on a journey with basically stone walls, skilled performers and a really imaginative style. Dare I say, the women would have been very pleased with how their plight was presented.

Only the shell of the original stone built prison remains but the tour guide is very informative and the stories told allow you to picture the scene as it was once was on the one walking tour.
