This is a contrast to Port Arthur, seeing the prison system from the point of view of the women who were transported. Unfortunately not much physical remains are left but enough to give a good idea of what the place was like. We had a very good guide who was interested, passionate and informative. The reception staff was also helpful and friendly. There is a small souvenir/book shop on site. We traveled easily to the site on Public Transport Metro bus from Franklin Square.

We live in Hobart and have visited many times. This is a place steeped in history and the guided tours give a great perspective on how difficult times were back in the day. Wonderful volunteers and staff.

Superb historic site that takes you back in time. We did the self guided tour and it gave us plenty of time to look at everything and transport you back in time. Loved the cottage with the layers of lino on the floor and the layers of wallpaper still intact on the walls. A must do when you are in Hobart.

After seeing so much at Port Arthur and Hobart city we thought this would be similar ?
It is pretty much four walls and an empty site that you can interpret what was there ?
Save your money and time for something else as we were very disappointed in this site

Dear Themessiahoffire
We appreciate you sharing your feedback and apologise that your experience did not meet your expectations. The Cascades Female Factory is a very different historic site to Port Arthur. Since it was in operation as a place of punishment and reform for female convicts in the 1800s, significant deterioration and removal of materials has occurred over time.
As one of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage Property, the attraction has undergone a large amount of restoration in recent years, in compliance with the Burra Charter, which defines basic principles for conservation of Australian heritage places. We purposefully keep the interpretation of the site to a minimum to provide visitors with a story that does not artificially impose new materials on the heritage site. We also offer Heritage Tours or Her Story dramatised tours as well as position guides around the site to share the history and answer any questions.
Starting early next year we will be kicking off a significant fundraising campaign to construct a new purpose-built History and Interpretation Centre to better tell these important stories of the convict women who helped build our nation.
Kind Regards,
Cascades Female Factory
