Not a huge museum and that is a good thing. We really liked the overview of Australian art and Joseph Brown collection; after all, that's why we were there. Paintings but also ceramics/pottery, furniture, clothing, jewelry made it very interesting.

Lovely new building in the federation Square complex. Excellent exhibitions, several visiting Australia's ugly past in regard to the first peoples. Well worth a visit. Right on the tram lines beside Flinders St Station

The exhibits were spread over 3 floors and contained some of the most iconic artworks by a good selection of Australian artists. Definitely worth a visit and even the free exhibits are wonderful.

We saw the Triennale in the National Gallery on St Kilda Road, but were not aware there was a second location, the Ian Potter Center. Luckily, we bumped into it. A great collection of Australian art, both contemporary and somewhat older.

Also loved the building, on the beautiful Federation Square.

The Australian side of the NGV and much more interesting than the European side. A broad collection but very strong on post-1900 getting stronger as the century goes on. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time. Temporary exhibitions were good but the collection is the star. If you only go to one art museum in Melbourne, go to this one.
