This was such a great place to conclude 2016 with .
We were interested in partaking in the banquet which included the Sukiyaki.
The entrees preceding the mains were delightful and so tasty .
The sashimi melted in my mouth and the everything we sampled was pleasing and so very delectable.
Friendly staff added to the pleasant atmosphere and so too the traditional seating we were allocated.
A great little place that delights the senses.
A must when visiting Melbourne.
Will visit soon !!

Thank Rosa H

Found this while strolling around Chinatown. Tiny restaurant, very nice food. Our kids (adults) who had recently traveled to Japan enjoyed the authentic Japanese drinks menu, "sparkling sake" a highlight. They went back the following night.

This restaurant is a bit of a hidden gem. Its a small establishment nestled in a alley way in Melbourne's China Town. Its good value, very friendly service and good food. Well worth a visit!

Little has changed in the 25 years I have been coming here. The decor may be a little tired and the tatami room has gone but it still manages to deliver on food. Although wine list is small we found a decent bottle to avoid the enormous corkage charged for BYO and between 4 of us ordered food to share. This time the tofu steak hotplate was the absolute winner and as always we ordered the eggplant with miso (an all time favourite) amongst various other dishes. Part of the fun of eating here is the atmosphere and the fun of seeing diners squeeze into the tiny space, you could easily think you were in Japan. Yamato holds such a unique place in Melbourne's eating scene and worth a visit if you a keen to experience something a little different to the large, sleek eateries offered throughout the CBD.

The staff don't speak English well so it's hard to order and ask questions but the food was delicious
