The Auckland Art Gallery is well worth a visit. The old building has been extremely well integrated into the newer extension, creating a beautifully light-filled junction skilfully curated with sculpture. I enjoyed the whole floor of NZ art including the Goldie portraits of Maori. I was hoping to see the Gottried Lindauers, which I saw in Berlin, but evidently they are so popular they are now in San Fransisco. I enjoyed the contemporary and modern art hang - the kinetic sculptures are a real highlight. "Manifesto" with Cate Blanchett playing many different roles on eleven screens is wonderful - enjoyed spending well over an hour moving from screen to screen until closing time at 5pm. Highly recommended.

We were recommended going to this art gallery because of the Maori portraits, which were amazing. However even our host told us it would be free entrance, but as we are international visitors we had to pay $20 each. Not sure it was worth that much to see all the contemporary art, but the Obliteration Room was good.

Very nice Gallery for everyone. A lot of different Art, very interesting. If you're living in Auckland the entrance is free.

We had a short amount of time in Auckland with our young child and saw the Obliteration Room exhibit was on - thought it would be a perfect activity as a family. And all websites, blogs etc said it was free.
So we were rather surprised on arrival that non-NZ citizens are charged $20 each just to enter - we paid, as we really wanted to see the Obliteration Room, but $40 is very steep for just that. We managed to see a bit of the modern galleries but with limited time and a fussy 2 year old we didn’t see much for our money. Coming from Adelaide, where our Art Gallery is free and a lot bigger, it was a bit of a disappointment.

Lots of interesting artwork to see and good thing was it was from varying eras. Yayoi Kusama's Obliteration Room was a real hoot. You are given a sheet of stickers when you go in and just stick them anywhere in the room - floor, walls, furniture, even a piano! I think the adults we saw had mire fun than the children!
