Owner description: Waitangi Treaty Grounds, New Zealand's most important historic site, is where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and the indigenous Maori in February 1840. Set on a stunning site overlooking the Bay of Islands, Waitangi is an absolute must-see for all visitors to the North, international and New Zealanders alike. Attractions include the historic Treaty House, a giant flagstaff, a unique fully carved Maori meeting house and the the world's largest single-hulled canoe (waka). Guided tours and cultural performances run at regular intervals throughout the day. Open daily except Christmas.

The Hangi was fabulous. The walk through the bush with challenges from the Maori chiefs was very exciting with Maori calls all around. The concert was the highlight for me. The tribute to the 25th Maori Battalion was very emotional and their performance was excellent. Well done Waitangi and their staff for an excellent evening. Thoroughly recommend this experience to all.

Our tour guide Kaz was hilarious, with a dry sense of humour. If you're doing the tour, keep in mind that you won't be taken inside the House of Assembly during the tour, so if you're keen to go inside, don't do the tour around midday. My group's tour ended just as the performance group locked the House for their preparation, and I had to leave for my boat, so didn't get the chance to go in. Noooo. At least there are photos of the inside of the House online.

I did find it fascinating how the history of the treaty is presented, the museum is great, and I enjoyed the cultural performance in the Meeting House, better than another one I saw, though they are all very similar in what they do. However our guide was boring and seemed to talk a lot without saying anything. They provided speaker phone things so you could hear him if you were at the back of the crowd, but their range was very short and kept cutting out.

This is an absolute must do! It takes a long time to go round if you want to see everything properly. A fascinating story behind the highly contentious Waitangi treaty that takes you from the early colonisation by French and the British, up until present day. The museum is fascinating. The tours are excellent, the guides were super knowledgable. The film is excellent. The Maori cultural display is brilliant and a must do if you have had little exposure to Maōri culture.
Take a decent amount of time out to go round this place. It is totally worth it!
