This place was great. Both my partner and I enjoy nature, and to be able to come out and enjoy a day in this unspoiled little part of the world was great.

We did the 90 minute Albatross tour, and enjoyed both the sights and our guide.

As an added bonus, there is a gun emplacement and a bit of the history of that seeps in to the tour.

Kia ora and thanks for taking the time to write a review.

Thanks for supporting us by taking our Unique Tour! There is the chance for great viewing at the moment, with 3-6 chicks on view, albatross chicks to see and breeding adults coming and going. Our team love sharing their knowledge and stories of the albatross and introducing visitors to the 'Royals of Taiaroa'.

Your tour fees go to a good cause - for conservation and education programmes to help look after this amazing wildlife sanctuary. A portion of the tour fees goes to the Pukekura Trust and supports the Trust's role as guardians of the headland. Our Otago Peninsula Trust is NZ's first charitable conservation trust, which was set up in 1967 to 'preserve and enhance Otago Peninsula'. As well as supporting conservation, pest control, habitat restoration and visitor facilities we also offer special prices and days for families to enable greater access and appreciation to the colony. We run education programmes for school children at a minimal cost for the pupils; in 2016 we hosted around 1500 students. The Trust also donates over $11,000 of free tickets annually to help schools, charities and good causes fundraise.

Hope you enjoyed the rest of your holiday!

All the best,
Ashleigh Compton

I had no idea what to expect but was completely blown away. I would definitely recommend going on a tour, the tour guide was very engaging and made sure we were able to see a Royal Albatross in flight, which is a truly spectacular sight. Definitely worth the money.

Thanks for supporting us by taking a tour! We are so pleased you enjoyed your experience with us. There is the chance for great viewing at the moment, with 2-4 chicks on view, albatross chicks to see and breeding adults coming and going. It is indeed a special and unique experience to be able to view these magnificent wild birds in their natural habitat and see the world’s only mainland breeding colony of Royal Albatross close up.

The view from the end of the peninsular is stunning. There were many birds about, but it will depend on the time of the year as to when you will see albatross. We had one fly in low over our heads and it was an amazing moment.
The interpretive centre is excellent and well laid out.

The Royal Albatross Centre itself, with its comprehensive historical and educational displays, videos, toilets, cafe, and gift shop is free to access for everyone. This is only made possible by the Trust's activities. As you will appreciate, it costs a significant amount to run a centre like this 364 days a year. We very much value all the contributions people make so that the Trust is able to offer this access and facilities to everyone year round. The cost of providing water and toilets to guests is about $100,000 per annum as water and sewage have to be trucked in and out of the headland. Thank you so much for your support of our Trust.

The Royal Albatross is either migrating, when it is young or mostly out at sea. So it is important to see them during breeding season or when there are chicks. We saw three chicks. They are fluffy and adorable, even when they are about the size of an adult.
Make sure also to book the tour with the disappearing canon. You get to see the tunnel system, the canon and you get even closer to the birds.

The efforts being taken to look after this colony of Royal Albatrosses, while still giving the public the opportunity to see them, are most impressive. While entry is not cheap, it is certainly going to a very good cause. We saw albatrosses circling before coming in to feed one of the extremely large, but still fluffy chicks, and the observation gallery gave the chance to get some good photos. As a bonus, there are also colonies of both Spotted Shags and Otago Shags on each side of the point, which we were able to see, although we did not have time to stay for the little blue penguins.
