A MUST SEE You’d be very surprised how many NZ’ders have not seen their own country.. Be sure to fill car with petrol at every opportunity as some places whilst driving are quite isolated. Check you have a good spare tyre and tools in car before setting off. Keep your phones charged at all times. Let friends even NZ friends you make - know your journey plans in case you need support of any kind.

The Southern Scenic route was an enjoyable way to travel between towns in the South. Some amazing scenery and great little stop offs along the way.

Worth taking the longer route. You will enjoy vistas that keep surprising with variety and beauty. Some roads are "unsealed" but take them anyway
Be sure your driver is attentive as up and down mountain roads are twisty.

We took five days to cover this part of the South Island on bicycles, staying in motels in TeAnau, then Invercargill, McLain's Falls, Owaka and Dunedin. Not much traffic, breathtaking vistas, a jillion sheep, beautiful farms. High points included Nugget Point, Curio Bay, the Otago Peninsula, the old railway tunnel and I can't recall what else. We came through in February, near the end of summer, but encountered rain, strong winds, and cool temps, as well as some very pleasant days. Definitely worth doing!

If you are going to do this trip and stop at all the options, then make sure you are up early and ready to go. As well as the drive, there are a lot of stops that easily gobble up more time than you planned. Like when we got to Waipapa point, the first stop there was a Sea Lion on the beach and the view from the light house at Nugget Point was so good we sat for a while just to enjoy it. We ended up having to skip some.
