Driving through Goulburn in search of food the day after Boxing Day easily leads to disappointment. Our two favourite high quality cafes were closed for a no doubt a well deserved break. The third one was recently destroyed in a fire. The choices open to us were very limited especially as we had our two four legged friends with us.
A parking spot opened up right outside Bryants. Worth a try we thought as there are outside tables (a bit grungy on the busy footpath) and we had previously had their pies as take always consumed sitting in the central park opposite the spectacular court house.
Unfortunately on this busy holiday weekday they had run out of meat based pies by about 1.45pm. I have not written this review because of the lack of pies. No pies? OK we tried to chose something else from the menu.
The menu is quite odd. Apart from some rather ordinary sandwiches on offer, there were about three rolls/focaccia style items done on a sandwich press. All loaded with cheese with so many ingredients it was hard to identify the foundation taste. All bar one had chicken paired up with either bacon or ham. I love bacon however bacon/ham does not make everything better. The chicken schnitzel with satay sauce did not sound appealing.
The photographs on TripAdvisor do not reflect the look of the place now. It is dark and uninviting. The images on TripAdvisor are quite old.
I appreciate and love visiting simple/cheap lunch spots such as pie shops. Simple should not mean dull. We felt this place was depressing.
So, we did something we rarely do. We departed without ordering. Even Maccas felt like a better option. As it happened the second choice ended up being quite good. I will review it shortly.
