My wife and I decided on a last minute weekend away on Thursday July 20th, because a neighbour was going to have a very noisy party on the Saturday. We first thought we would go and visit some friends in Warwick, but the Jazz and Jumpers festival was on, so getting a room was impossible at this late stage, so we decided to go to Toowoomba, to visit a dear friend there. The next trick was, to get a room for the weekend so late in the week, we checked out some places we had stayed at in Toowoomba before, but could not get a room for what we wanted to spend, so went to Trip Advisor to find an alternative and choose City Motor Inn.
We were a bit concerned about the location being opposite the hospital and on a main road like West Street, but our concerns were unfounded, as we were given a room right up the back of the site, which proved to be very quite after the normal peak afternoon traffic was finished. There was one Ambulance that came to the hospital on Saturday night that woke us up, but considering they could have been saving someone's life, I therefore have no right to complain about this and it certainly would not stop us staying here again.
When booking the room on the 20th, I mentioned to the lady that I had a bad back and was hoping the room I was booking, had a least a two seater sofa or two single lounge chairs, she informed me that it only had one single chair, but that would not be a problem as she would upgrade us for no extra, to a room that had two lounge chairs, I thanked her for her kindness and booked the room.
On arriving Friday afternoon, we were greeted by a lovely friendly lady at reception, who checked us in and guided us to where our room was on the site.
We found the room easily and after opening the door, we thought we were over at the hospital, as the room had that hospital clean smell, this told us that the room was very clean, or someone had spilt the disinfectant, it turned out the room was so clean, it was bordering on sterile, we know, we checked. There is one place that most motel cleaners never clean and that is the sliding window track, but even that was clean, everything in the room was spotlessly clean, no dust, no fluff no nothing, so if you are looking for a super clean room in Toowoomba, we can recommend this place. There was a nice kitchenette in the back of the room, so if you wanted to self cater this could be easily done, there is a full sized fridge and a microwave plus a sandwich/grill press, but no hotplates or oven, so probably not possible to cook all your favourite meals, but with a bit of forward planning of your menu and the equipment provided, it is possible to self cater.
Probably the only thing that is a bit out of date and noisy, in this well fitted out room, is the old through the wall reverse cycle air conditioner, anyone who has ever owned one, will know that these type of units are not very conducive to sleep, but it did work well and made the room nice and cosy before we climbed into bed. We just turned it off at about 9.30pm and this seemed to be enough to keep the room warm, until breakfast time the next morning. I think if these old Air Con's were replaced with new silent operation split systems, this would be the closet to a near perfect room in this price range that I would have stayed in.
Getting into the motel can only be achieved by a left turn off West Street, so if you are coming up West from James Street, you will have to go past the location, make a U turn where possible and come back, we found a place to make the U turn only about 200m further up West Street. The other option, is to do an illegal right turn into the motel, over the single solid white line and hope the police don't catch you doing it.
There was plenty of extra blankets and pillows in the room if they were required, plus the towels were soft, very clean and super white.
My bad back did not like the Tub lounge chairs that are provided in the room, but this is probably not the problem of the chairs, mostly I can't sit comfortably in nearly all lounge chairs, other than Lazy Boy recliners, but one cannot expect to get this sort of luxury in a motel room at this price point, it is not their problem I have a bad back, so this is not a complaint, just pointing out that these sort of lounge chairs don't suit someone with bad lower back pain.
We were in room 16 which is a downstairs room in a block of 4 and we were very grateful that the lady I booked with gave us this room, as I would have found it very difficult to have climbed the steps to one of the upstairs rooms. These 4 downstairs rooms have interconnecting doors, thus making them not as soundproof as a solid brick wall would, I can see why these doors would be great for a large family group, who want to be able to move between rooms without going outside on a cold winter's night, but they do tend to let the noises from each room filter into the adjoining rooms.
Despite for me, the uncomfortable lounge chairs and the slight annoyance of the noise filtering through from the other room, my wife and I would stay here again. It is very central to most everything in Toowoomba thus making it a good place to stay.
