Owner description: At Sovereign Hill, the story of an important time and place in Australian History, and the people who lived it, lives on. An internationally acclaimed tourist attraction, Sovereign Hill prides itself on its close attention to detail found in every aspect of this living, outdoor museum. Sovereign Hill is a glimpse of the vigour and excitement of life on Australia’s 1850s goldfields. Visitors can find real gold in the creek – gold pans are provided and it’s ‘finders keepers’, see $150,000 worth of molten gold poured into a gleaming bar, and take in the rich program of activities, shows and demonstrations. On Main Street there are working shops, hotels and a theatre – all based on original Ballarat businesses. Visitors are able to watch goldfields tradespeople in action and take a ride around the township in a horse-drawn coach. For the brave hearted, journey underground on a gold mine tour.

This is truely one of Ballarat’s greatest assets. A step back in time in an interactive living and breathing museum. A range of good old fashion activities providing a much need break form the digital world that chases us everywhere. Ten pin bowling using a wooden ball and pins, candle making, panning for gold where you are almost guaranteed to get small amount of gold, an excellent bakery and lollie shop( raspberry drops a winner),blacksmith sessions..... the list goes on and on.

I would encourage everyone to also attend the sound and light show, a world class show and in my opinion better than other world class shows such as the pyramids in Egypt.

Thank JKJP

We visited Sovereign Hill as part of a visit to Melbourne. It is easily accessed by public transport - train from Southern Cross station and bus to the attraction. Once inside Sovereign Hill there is a wide range of activities to interest people of all ages - from panning for gold, climbing through underground gold mines, watching vignettes portraying different aspects of gold rush life. The gold smelting experience was a particularly memorable one. While the entry fee is quite steep, a visit to Sovereign Hill is a must if in the area - particularly for families.

What a delightful experience!

Signed up for it (through Greyline)with some trepidation not knowing what to expect but we were pleasantly surprised!

Our driver Rob gave very good commentary on the 2 hour drive from Melbourne.

Ballarat was a beautiful town with an old world charm and the stop at the flower filled garden was most refreshing!

But the real icing is Sovereign hill. The whole setting of the gold mine settlement, everyone in period costumes, the stage coach with those gorgeous horses, the little skits held at intervals, the melting of gold, visit to the gold mine and photograph in period costume and the gold museum made it all a truly unique and memorable experience!

They sure have gone to great lengths to give you a truly authentic experience.

If you have not visited a goldmine before then go for it!You won't be disappointed!

This place has lots to offer and we very much enjoyed our visit. There's lots going on and the place really reflects the period when Gold was discovered in the area. Highly recommend
