Not that easy to find a good hotel in Lech for UK half term week - preference seems to be given to repeat visitors - but managed to find the last available family room on Bookings.com.
The hotel location is just out of the centre: we were fine with this (less noisy than the five star hotels right in the centre) but it did involve a sometimes icy walk down a hill - only 3 minutes but would be tricky in ski boots. Fortunately the hotel recommended Sportalp by the main lifts for ski hire - they enabled one to store hired skis and owned boots in the shop overnight, which I would highly recommend.
I think the best thing about the hotel was the food, which was consistently high quality. Wide choice at breakfast, both hot and cold, and the 5 course (6 if you go for cheese too) dinner included a wide salad buffet (a meal in itself if so inclined) plus a choice of three different mains, including an Austrian speciality. The meals were very varied from day to day - not just traditional Alpine potato and cheese based dishes we've seen elsewhere.
Lounge/bar area is very traditional and warm with an open fire - importantly, seemed always to have plenty of space for the guests. Spa area lacks a pool but has a huge jacuzzi/whirlpool plus sauna/steam rooms.
Service generally very friendly and efficient, although one point to improve - it seemed very difficult to get our wine glasses refilled at dinner - quite a few nights we found ourselves still drinking wine with dessert or with coffee. Would make sense just to leave the wine bottle at the table i think.
Our family suite was fine. Warm, comfortable bed in main bedroom, plenty of storage space, two flatscreen TVs (with UK channels - BBC1/2/4/CBBC/ITV) and spacious bathroom. Small windows but great views over Lech. The one downside (and the biggest improvement point overall) was that the sofa bed only slept one; for child number two we got a rather rickety camp bed which seemed to collapse rather easily. Need to invest in a double sofa bed i think.
As virtually every reviewer has mentioned, Egon Zimmermann himself is incredibly charming and really makes the hotel special.
Overall, highly recommended and we all had an excellent time. Just need to replace the camp bed!
