Jacqui and John are your hosts at the Mahitahi Lodge in Bruce Bay. Bruce Bay for as far as we could see consists of a few houses and a town hall. No shops (closest in Fox Glacier, around 40-minute drive), no gas station, no restaurants, one coffee caravan located right on the Bruce Bay beach! 40 minutes south of Fox Glacier and an hour north of Haast.

But who needs all of the above if you stay at the Mahitahi Lodge. Both Jacqui and John are excellent hosts. Story tellers and excellent caretakers. John is a fisherman and Jacqui an excellent cook. John’s breakfasts are irresistible and the accommodation lovely and relaxing. A nice Jacuzzi in the garden to relax the muscles after a nice hike to one of the Glaciers.

It may seem a bit out of the way but it’s by no means in the middle of nowhere once you are inside. I would recommend a minimum of two nights, you won’t regret it.

Room Tip: If in season ask for the whitebait fritters! the best ever.....

We stayed for two nights at this beautiful lodge. Our room was very comfortable and private, having it‘s own patio. The Lodge is cosy, quiet and well located near the beach. We loved seeing the ocean through their large bay windows.

The meals and wine were excellent. Jacqui is a great cook as well as a generous and charming host. She even made a delicious birthday cake for me!

Thank you again Jacqui and John for making our stay perfect.

Spent over a week in NZ for our honeymoon staying in resorts, high end hotels, eating 3 course meals at top restaurants and having a great time and we had booked this expecting something similar as it was expensive to book particularly the meal at $170 for 2 people.
The accomodation was a room with ensuite in a private house. The meal was home cooked. Total cost $515 NZ for one night which by far was the most expensive of all places we had stayed even resorts with 3 course meals at restaurants cooked by chefs.

We welcome all TA reviews as they often give us an opportunity to look at our operations and see where we have room for improvement and learn. Unfortunately this review offers no constructive criticism and is more a reflection on the reviewers lack of research and it may simply come down to the fact that we were inappropriate for him. Our offerings are exactly as noted on the website and we find this review unexpected when the reviewer knew the offerings for price and accommodation when the booking was made. In regards to our dinner option this is something we feel is very good value for money. Three courses of local sourced product cooked by our own inhouse chef. The price includes generous amounts of premium NZ wine with almost individual service. $85 per head for three courses including wine, I would challenge anyone to be able to produce better offerings.
Mahitahi Lodge is a purpose built eco-friendly lodge., built from sustainable and locally sourced materials. We have three large guest rooms with large ensuite and attached private courtyard. There is a large guest lounge upstairs with views out towards the Tasman Sea. The dining area is off the guest lounge – a large communal dining area used for both breakfast and dinner service. Our rates include full cooked breakfast options. We get many return bookings from our overseas guests – returning for our location, our property, our food and our great hosting. That night we shared a convivial dinner with our other guests as well and we understood it was a great evening. Given the lovely comments left by this reviewer in our guest book, particularly about the fantastic dinner, we really have to question the motives behind this review.

We took over all three rooms in February. We were late arriving due to being let down by the hire car company at Picton, but nothing was too much trouble for our host Jacqui. A welcome drink and home made biscuit on arrival, despite it being 11pm. Rooms were well equipped, well sound proofed and views over the lush greenery in the garden. Food was superb, as was John's trip round the local area during dinner. A gift of freshly made muffins on departure to help our journey as the highway was closed due to a landslip topped off a great stay. Overall a great place to stay in a beautifully atmospheric area.

We stayed a few nights in this nice lodge with John and his wife Jacqui. We think the location is perfect to explore this beautifull region. John likes to show you around and Jacqui knows here things in the kitchen. We loved what she cooked for us! From here we went to the glaciers. Impressive.
We loved to stay here, these people are unique!
