In the heart of the old city , Sekret , was a very well kept secret on this Friday evening. In the beautifully restored cellars we were the only diners but it did not matter, the food , good traditional polish recipes, was excellent and plentiful and the waiter attentive and friendly. We especially liked the way the wine was presented. A good selection of wine was bought to the table and he offered to let us taste a few before we decided. We were reasonable, we went for the first white we tasted and then the first red.
Go to Sekret but maybe don't tell too many people about it , it is a good secret

We actually discovered this hotel through our travel guide, proposing it as one of the must visit in the city.
Reaching there, we were a bit relactant to enter, as the restaurant is actually underground but going in, we found an amazing place with a decoration never seen before.
We were the only couple in the place, so we were treated accordingly.
The selection of meals is not that big, meaning that they are offering frew dishes that obviously they are the best.
As a appetizer they served us bread with a spread of nuts and something Polish that really could not figure out with certainity what was in there...Was just ok.
We ordered as first dish salmon with Caviar and was really tastefull, while our main course of deer ragou, and pork sirloine with pourre was really a surprise.
Very well presented dishes and really tasteful. We accompanied our food with a glass of red wine.

This was one of the best restaurants we ate at during our 2 weeks in Gdansk, Warsaw, & Krakow. We were initially reluctant to eat in a restaurant in a basement until our private guide recommended Sekret and explained that many restaurants are in the basements now although they were at street levels hundreds of years ago. We went down into the restaurant and were immediately dazzled by the decor. Fresco paintings on every wall surface of the multiple sitting rooms. Just spectacular. We picked the room in which we wanted to sit and proceeded to an outstanding meal with solicitous service. Try the pork knuckle. It is authentic Polish cuisine and it is great. Our waiter explained the cooking process, nearly a day long, and said to make sure we tasted crust on the skin. We did and oh, so good. Salad with egg & bacon was delightful too. A bit of a surprise but wonderful flavors. At the end, our waiter brought complementary vodkas made from pigwa (quince). Sweet, kind of like a sherry. And then he surprised us with 2 more vodkas each to taste. One was from horseradish. Not our favorite but fun to try. I would go back to this restaurant again. It is right off the square in old town and the restaurants on the square itself were a bit touristy.

Our private tour of eight tried to reserve at Sekret on Sunday, May 12th but were told they would only accept cash as their credit card machine was not working. As we had just arrived in Poland that day, we weren't sure we had enough zlotnys to pay for dinner. On Monday, May 13th we asked our guide to reserve at Sekret as long as we could pay by credit card. She made the call and assured us that would be so. The restaurant is lovely and as there was only one other party of eight or ten, the service should have been good. However, my baked cod over pureed potatoes was cold, and others weren't that pleased with their meals. The waiter was desultory and the service left something to be desired. When we asked for our checks (each couple paid separately), we were told that the credit card machine wasn't working and we MUST pay cash. As the leader of the group, I said that we would not do so, that we had called to make certain we could use credit cards. Finally, when it was clear that our persistence needed to be honored, the woman manager came with her WORKING credit card machine and settled our bills. As we were leaving, the other party which consisted of several men and two women were paying their bills with the credit card machine.
