Great food, friendly staff and super entertainment. Classic Hungarian food in a super environment- felt more like dinner with friends than eating out in a foreign city. The musicians were tremendous and made a special night more memorable. Thank you!

Unwelcome tourist trap. With the wide range of places to eat in Budapest why let unfriendly staff bother you? Was also suspicious that they take cash only and he gave me the change from his wallet. Really didn’t want to pay the service fee in this place. Certainly wouldn’t recommend it.

Greetings again!
This time we're un hungary, Budapest, a few blocks East of the River Danube on Oktober 6 U, which is a right on Jòzsef Attila U. going city way. And It's a hot day. We've just come back from tha basilica which sits behind the restaurant. It's late and we are thinking that the closest fast food joint looks more and more promising :(... None the less we come back through the road we came in to see the basilica and stop by a rather quaint and lonely place, just off a small square with a fountain. After bargaining with the owner for about 5 seconds ( i bet the look of famished tourists persuaded him to let us eat :) ) we get a table inside the very locally decorated main dining room. The while restaurant is a throw back to traditional hungarian architecture (wood, strange tables and white lime stone walls). It's comfortable, cosy and well aired (some times you get places where it's really cramped, fun and interesting, but cramped none the less). Not Loca, it's a really good start. We even changed place for an outside table on the pavement of the very quite street mid way through appetisers. They just smiled and put us on the new table. Drinks are as usual:Big frosty glasses of hungarian Larger which incidentally was initially brewed in Hungary. Some of us sample the national alcoholic delicacies: Palinka! plum spirits , with a nice ice cube on hot day , it makes your afternoon all the mode suave :)
Anyhoot, down to the munchies. We're a group of about 8 people, so the menu gets scorched ; appetisers, mains, sides, desserts ... a Kitchen nightmare. Does the chef get anything wrong? nope :D are we all served on time, together? Yessir! perfect :D
What did we have ? We tried the goulash, a sort of soup with meat and vegetables in a red pepper sauce which in one of the best I've had in a while. Close to what mom does, not quite the same, but close. So If all they had was that, I'd would have had seconds and thirds! We also tried the local cured meats and pickles while we drank our cold beers. The local wild hairy pig is a must, like most hams from strange pigs (like the wild pigs of Portugal and Spain, or Corsica) the meats are very savoury, sweet and with a hint of smoke from the paprika it goes great with the beer. As for mains, you can't go wrong, smoked trout, braised porc in paprika sauce, pan fried veal escalope with sour cream. The sides ranging from salads to pickled vegetables. The local pasta made from dense tangy dough which just drinks up the gravy and is a treat. It's wholesome food made with love and attention which just screams home (even if the flavours are alien) IF you're on a diet, forget it. it's not fat mind you, it's just filling to an arterial default. and you just drown it down with their sumptuous Tokaji which just lifts it all to a different place. Hungarian food is like the illegitimate love child of Italian and Russian cuisine brought up with a good douse of jewish, turkish and gipsy flourishes, and you serve all that in 18th century Austrian decadence. After 15 miles taking pictures, it's gorgeous. I always reserve a special place for deserts because of the way a desert can ruin a meal or not. And boy did they NOT disappoint: The classic was at hand: hot Apple strudel with cold creamy vanilla sauce. need I say more? I haven't met one person who does like the proposition. the pastry was a sweet buttery crunchy mess of utter delight, the apples had a citrusy spike which cut through the pastry with perfection and the whole thing was brought together by a not too sweet vanilla cream sauce which just creamed: "I got up at 3 am just to make this for you because I like to cook and that my clients leave with a smile".
So if you're in town, and looking for a place off the beaten track; well Lòca is a good place to start :D
as always, your's in the art of the fork,
A.

I was there with friends during Christmas holidays - ofcourse restaurant was rather full but the local food was amazing, waiters were really helpful with wine choise and a live music was excellent. If you are in Budapest - you definetly should come there and feel the hungarian atmosphere!
