Owner description: The oldest building in Kapisztran square is the Mary Magdalene Tower built in late Gothic style, also the only medieval monument maintained in its original form. The building was severely damaged during the 1945 siege of Budapest. The restoration of the Tower as a monument began in 1950, but at the same time, the leaders of the anti-church regime decided to demolish the church. After being closed to the public for decades, Mary Magdalene Tower opened its doors to visitors again in the summer of 2017. The lookout tower on the higher level offers an extraordinary panorama with views to the most important buildings of Budapest and the nearby Buda hilltops. The 15th century building will soon be home to a cultural and tourism centre providing insight into both the Buda Castle and the church, as well as the Midday bell chimes and how it is connected to Hungarian history. In the Ruins garden, visitors can enjoy an hourly carillon.

Just recently opened the tower has impressive 360 degree views. 172 steps and 900 HUF puts you at the top. They are still working on the place so as yet there are no exhibitions or displays. Just the tower and the views. Still worth it.

I would suggest making a quick pass by, if you like taking nice photos about historical building ruins.

There isn't much left of the church but the ruins are interesting and one can climb up the tower for a small fee. It is a quiet spot away from the main tourist sites and worth a stop if you are walking the perimeter of the wall, or near the archives or military museum.

The tower is right at the end of the old town in Buda, and it was only because we did a circular walk of the town that we came across it. It must have been quite an impressive church before it was destroyed, leaving only the tower. There is a small admission charge to climb the tower but it is worth it for the views.
